Control your impulses

I had some late work last night. Part of it was on the computer and another part involved driving @pamarias to the next town to where her parents were. It's a 1 hour drive, so I decided I wanted some coffee so I could be nice and alert during the drive. There was a Starbucks on the way, so I made a quick stop for the usual: americano, no sugar, put it in my aluminum thermal coffee container which also gets a discount.

It was 10:00pm and the scene at the coffee shop was unreal. Dozens of people cued up inside to get their triple venti white chocolate chip extra whipped cream fudge decadent sprinkle unicorn royal delight with gummy bears.

I couldn't help my jaw dropping and asking myself

Do people need that much sugar in the evening? or is it maybe a product of unhealthy eating habits and great marketing?

I'm not here to judge, but rather take some learning for myself. If you practice restraint and limit the amount of sugar and processed food you intake, you'll feel lighter and your body will show it. Not to mention your wallet. refraining from spending $12 on a sugary drink can go a long way.

If you refrain from consuming pornography, you'll have healthier relationships, a better sex life, self esteem and concentration.

If you refrain from abusing alcohol, you'll have better rest, productive weekend mornings and reduced anxiety. You'll be hydrated and have focus, concentration and good mood. Just like with the sugary drinks, you'll have more money at the end of the month too.

Avoid responding to instant messages... instantly. There are very few things that need immediate attention. Set aside deep focus time where nothing should distract you.

If you can do these things, even if it's partially and on top of this, if you can make it a habit of learning, working and improving your mind as well as your body, you'll feel better, look better, be better.

This is a journal entry intended for me. It's a reminder to myself that good things come to those who reject the cheap, immediate dopamine rushes and embrace long-term goals that sometimes come with short-term discomfort.

If you find any of the words here useful, please feel free to take them for yourself.

This post really nailed it for me. On so many levels. Every year for a while i have picked theme for the year. Something to put my attention toward. 2023 i wanted to try to catch the limiting language and thoughts i had. I gave that year the phrase. ‘You can have it ALL’ or shorter, the have it all year. What that meant to me was that, i could be a good dad, a good husband, be a good hotel owner, boss, and i could be healthy, have time for fitness, have time for creative endeavors, have time for friends, nature hikes…. And i could still stay on top of accounting and all the dregs that comes with being self employed… I could have all those things and no 1 thing needed to be left out or limited.
This led to me truly realizing how important time and scheduling was. i really started to focus on my health and how i scheduled my existence and things fell into place pretty well. But i saw that certain things were eating my time… and so i questioned what really deserved space and energy in my life.
This led to 2024 them…. Year Clear. I themed the year around finding clarity in all its forms. Sobriety, what was most important and cutting out some of the things that were distracting.
Now here we are in 2025, Year of the Thrive.
I’m actively moving toward all things in my life that bring and hold the Thriving energy.
So alcohol, sugars and foods that make me feel lurgy… they are out for sure.
I think the place in your journal entry above that hit me was that i dont give enough time to the deep thinking and no distractions place. I really should add it to my weekly schedule like it’s a job. But the best type of work 😉
thanks for this great post!

Everyone knows what’s good for their health and I think the problem with all of us is this thing called “urge”
There’s always an urge to take too much sugar or maybe alcohol which isn’t good for our health

Always?

I wouldn't say always or all of us. Some have urges for sugar because they're addicted to it. Some have urges for alcohol because they're addicted to it. If we're able to cut down on consumption we might eventually not have these urges any more.

What's going on with Starbucks there? I have never seen starbucks filled with that many people. For me, Starbucks used to be the place that I get my foreign coffee beans that are of good quality. These days some places have sold premium coffee beans and I barely go there unless I don't want to gamble with my coffee tastes.

Where I am from, somehow chains like Strabucks, Mcd are marketed premium and of high quality. There are many cases when they do better than our local ones. So, it always intrigued me that this rule doesn't apply to some countries 😂

This was a reminder for me because these days I started getting addicted to baking again haha and anything that's excessive is not good.

Starbucks coffee is great! nothing wrong with it at all. I don't think it's about the coffee though. Sugary drinks with white chocolate and pumpkin and crap like that are not coffee 😄, they're sugar. I think a lot of people are just addicted to sugar and victims of advertising.
