Hello, fellow nature and orchid lovers! Today I'm bringing you a post where I'll be visiting the mountains of Setubal to gather information on spring orchids. I haven't yet posted about the types of orchids that grow between the months of March and June. Since I'm in the southern part of the country, the species from here clearly aren't available in the north, and vice versa. My post not only focuses on orchids but also combines a beautiful trail with a glimpse into the most beautiful side of the district.🌷🌄

Hola amigos amantes de la naturaleza y las orquideas! hoy les traigo un post donde visitare las montanas de Setubal para recolectar informacion sobre las orquideas de primavera, de momento no e publicado sobre el tipo de especies de orquideas que crecen entre los meses de (marzo hasta junio) como estoy en la zona sur del pais claramente las especies de aca no se consiguen en el norte y viceversa. Mi post no solo se centra en las orquideas si no tambien es la combinacion de un hermoso sendero y te muestro el lado mas bonito del distrito.🌍🏔️

For this adventure, I had to walk a lot of different paths! I walked a lot of different routes, I got covered in mud, I got bitten by insects! It rained a little, but hey, who can I blame? Nature is like that... unpredictable! The important thing is that I got results. I saw more than four species of orchids, three of which I hadn't noticed before, so it seemed like a very interesting hike. I've left the coordinates of where I started on the map.🌍🌄
Para esta aventura tuve que recorrer muchos caminos! diferentes rutas, me llene de barro, me picaron insectos! llovio un poco, pero bueno a quien le reclamo? la naturaleza es asi... Impredecible! lo importante es que consegui resultados, vi mas de cuatro especies de orquideas, tres de ellas no la habia reportado hasta ahora por lo que me parecio una caminata muy interesante, en el mapa te dejo las coordenadas de donde inicie.🚩🌍
An orchid in danger of extinction🧭🌷/Una orquidea en peligro de extincion🌍🌄
Our first discovery is Cephalanthera longifolia, it is an orchid that has a terrestrial habit, meaning we only find it on the ground and not as a climber, this plant is classified as "uncommon" however I see that it is distributed throughout Portugal unlike others that we have already seen such as the "italica" it prefers a calcareous and acidic soil, we normally see it in open spaces or with very little vegetation! They do not like to grow in soils where there is a layer of decomposing organic matter. I saw this one here by the side of the road, I saw about 4 or 5 on the whole walk, all by the side of the road, curious no?🌍🚩🌄
nuestra primera descubierta se trata de Cephalanthera longifolia es una orquidea que tiene habito terrestre osea solo la conseguimos en el suelo y no como trepadera, esta planta esta catalogada como "poco comun" sin embargo veo que esta distribuida en todo Portugal a diferencia de otras que ya vimos como la "italica" prefiere un suelo calcarea y acido, la vemos normalmente en espacios abiertos o muy pocas vegetacion! no les gusta crecer en suelos donde exista una capa de materia organica en descomposicion. Esta de aqui la vi al lado de la carretera, vi unas 4 o 5 en toda la caminata todas al lado de la carretera curioso no?🏔️🌷
It can grow up to 70cm in length and have 4 to 12 leaves. Its flowers are white, slightly open, and spike-shaped, with 5-20 sepals. Its flowering period ranges from February to June. One of the identification keys is whether it has white flowers (longifolia) or pink flowers (rubra). In some European countries, such as Belgium, it is in danger of extinction.🏔️✍🏻
puede llegar a medir hasta 70cm y presentar de 4 a 12 hojas, las flores son blancas poco abiertas en forma de espiga, 5-20 sepalos su epoca de floracion va desde febrero-junio una de las claves de identificacion es si tiene flores blancas es: (longifolia) flores rosadas (rubra). En algunos paises de europa como belgica esta en peligro de extincion.🌄🌷

The trail is very pretty with lovely views of the mountains. We can photograph a great biodiversity of plant and animal species. Today I'm focusing on orchids, which are abundant in the Setubal area. You just have to know where to look. Depending on the terrain, whether it's rocky or sandy, you'll find very specific species. This information helps you compare orchids! We already know that Cephalanthera longifolia grows in areas with rocky soil and near roads where vegetation is almost nonexistent.✍🏻🚩🌍
el sendero es muy bonito con lindas vistas hacia la montana, podemos fotografiar una gran biodiversidad de especies de plantas y animales, hoy estoy enfocado en las orquideas que por la zona de Setubal son abundantes solo hay que saber donde buscar, dependiendo del terreno si es rocoso o arenoso encontraremos especies que son muy especificas, y este dato sirve para comparar las orquideas unas con otras! ya sabemos que (Cephalanthera longifolia) es de zonas con suelo rocoso y cerca de carreteras donde la vegetacion es casi nula.🕵🏻📕
This species (Orchis papilionacea) is still active in spring and although it blooms earlier than the other previous ones, we can see them together in the same landscape. This orchid, of which I saw a specimen on my path, begins to grow already in February and it is common to see its flowers in March. By May it is difficult to see another one, so it was a privilege for me to capture it in a photograph! It is also uncommon and in reality its distribution is more limited and it prefers to grow in calcareous, rocky soils with an acidic pH.🌍🚩✍🏻
Esta especie (Orchis papilionacea) aun esta activa en primavera y apesar que florece primero que las otra anterior podemos verlas juntas en el mismo paisaje, esta orquidea la cual vi un ejemplar en mi camino ya en febrero comienza a crecer y es comun ver sus flores en marzo, ya en mayo es dificil ver otra por eso fue todo un privilegio para mi captarla en fotografia! tambien poco comun y en realidad su distriubucion es mas limitada y prefiere crecer en suelos calcareos, rocosos y un pH acido.🌷🌄🏔️

They have an adaptation that attracts the "opposite sex of the bee" to achieve effective pollination, it grows in less demanding terrain and can be seen among low bushes, never in areas with high vegetation! I am lucky that it is in its last month of flowering because at the end of April it no longer has flowers.🕵🏻📕
Hoy nuevamente me encuentro con: (Ophrys tenthredinifera) la cual la estudiamos en uno de mis post: (https://peakd.com/hive-113748/@biologistbrito/new-species-identified-ophrys-nueva-especie-identificada-ophrys-en-es) te recomiendo leerlo para aprender mas sobre esta hermosa orquidea que a diferencia de las otras son conocidas por imitar una "abeja" asi es... Tienen una adaptacion que atrae al "sexo opuesto de la abeja" para lograr una efectiva polinizacion, crece en terrenos menos exigentes y puede verse entre matorrales bajos, nunca en terrenos con alta vegetacion! tengo la suerte que esta en su ultimo mes de floracion pues ya en finales de abril no tiene flores.🌄🌷🏔️
Note that there are certain areas of the mountain where orchids of any kind don't grow. This one, for example, is where the soil is too clayey and rocky. I actually only see succulent plants adapted to fairly dry soils. Could this be an indication that no orchids can grow in soils with this characteristic? Maybe... I'll keep investigating.📕🌄
Note que hay ciertas zonas de la montana donde no crecen las orquideas de ningun tipo, esta por ejemplo donde la tierra es demasiado arcillosa y rocosa, en realidad solo veo plantas del tipo suculentas adaptadas para terrenos bastantes secos, puede esto ser un indicativo que en suelos de esta caracteristica no puede crecer ninguna orquidea? puede ser... Seguire investigando.🕵🏻✍🏻🌍

Another very interesting fact that I think I discovered today is that if orchids are absent in rocky and very clayey soils, why are they abundant in areas very close to the river where the ground is only slightly less rocky? How attractive is the river and water for an orchid? In reality, many of them don't need much water, but does water attract pollinators? Well, I was analyzing the soil and I saw that next to the river a layer of moss is created and that's where they can grow! Not directly in the rocky soil! Since there is no moss in the previous soil, there is no way for an orchid to filter water! What a crazy fact, right?🌍
Otro dato muy interesante que creo haber descubierto hoy es que si las orquideas son ausentes en tierras rocosas, y muy arcillosas, porque abundan en zonas muy proximas del rio donde el terreno es apenas muy poco menos rocoso? que tan atractivo es el rio y el agua para una orquidea? en realidad muchas de ellas no necesitan demasiada agua, pero acaso el agua atrae polinizadores? pues estuve analizando el terreno y vi que al lado del rio se crea una capa de musgo y es alli donde ellas pueden crecer! no directo en el suelo rocoso! al no haber musgo en el terreno anterior no hay forma de una orquidea filtrar agua! que dato loco no?🚩🗺️

How is it possible that I see some orchids in the mountains, but when I'm outside, I start to see many more species? What's the answer to this? In reality, a plant doesn't follow a pattern; it doesn't know that growing on the street could be stepped on! My intuition tells me that growing next to the street means, firstly, there are no weeds, meaning the terrain is open; secondly, the wind can do the job of scattering the seeds and grow more efficiently! I think this might be the answer.
Como es posible que dentro de la montana vea algunas orquideas y cuando estoy en la calle comienzo a ver muchas mas especies? cual es la respuesta sobre esto? en realidad una planta no sigue un patron, no sabe que crecer en la calle puede ser pisada! mi intuicion me dice que crecer al lado de la calle primeramente no hay maleza osea el terreno es abierto, segundo el viento puede cumplir el trabajo de esparcir las semillas y crecer de forma mas eficiente! creo que esta puede que sea la respuesta.
