RE: The three Dendrobium orchids in bloom

in Orchid Lovers2 years ago

Maybe it is not cold enough for them in fall/winter. They need colder few weeks to bloom.
If you can keep them in the coldest place on your house until they start to show little buds, maybe that would help.

I gave up buying them, but because I don't have space. They grow really big. And the messy canes is something I like the least about them too.

Phals don't want to bloom for me... This year only the miniature have flowers. None of the big ones.

Sort:

One orchid friend of mine told me she stops watering them from Halloween till Valentines and I followed that advice, but to the misery of my Dens 😂

I’ll try moving them to colder spots next winter. I still have a few non-nobile dens alive, but also never bloom, just grow keiki’s.

Phals can be temperamental too. I have some that bloom every year on the clock, while others I forgot what colour they are as I haven’t seen them in bloom for so long 😂

Oh boy.. It all depends on what orchid and what is the temperature you keep it. If it is warm, they still need some water or they will just dry up. I don't think they would ever get bone dry in nature being attached to the tree. It is always some condensation around, some fog or mist. Not exactly the same as in rain season, but something.

I water mine less when I see they stopped growing which is probably around Halloween and start to give them more water when I see buds forming. But I never stop completely and I still give them a little splash like once a month. Not soaking like I do during the year.
The temp in winter is probably around 15 degrees.

That’s what I thought too, but since her approach worked better than mine, I gave it a go with a disastrous effects 😂
Oh well, maybe I misunderstood her advice. Maybe she does the same - water them just a little 🤷🏻‍♀️
