Calopogon tuberosus

Calopogon, like many other orchids, is an indicator species of good remnant accompaniment. It is a perennial herbaceous, it reaches 12-45 cm in height.

A distinguishable feature of this plant is that, in counting of many orchids, it is not resupinated. The apex of calopogon growth is at the top of the flower, not at the base, as is common in many other genera.

This was described by Britton, Sterns & Poggenb. and published in Preliminary Catalogue of Anthophyta and Pteridophyta Reported as Growing Spontaneously within One Hundred Miles of New York 52. 1888.

Its generic name that comes from the Greek and means “beautiful beard”, in reference to the grouping of hairs that adorn the label.

Tuberosus: Latin epithet that means “tube-shaped”.
