Reflection: Quiet Time, at the End of the Day

I have always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with sleep.

Most of the time, I am "pretty impressed with myself" if I manage to get seven hours of sleep on any given night. Usually... it's less.

Lately, I've gotten a bit better, mostly thanks to the practice of taking about an hour to wind down before I actually go to bed.

I have been told that for those affected by Sensory-Processing Sensitivity — as I am — making room for "wind down time" at night is an essential part of ongoing wellness. I typically ignored this advice with my own brand of "I can deal with pretty much ANYthing!" bravado... as a result of which I often found myself scatterbrained and a sleepy by the time mid-afternoon rolled around.

Life around here tends to be pretty full.

I often start my days with lots of enthusiasm, along with the idea that I am going to get "on the ball" and get a blog post out by 10:30am. But then stacks of email, cats and dogs needing food, breakfast, household chores, gardening and other stuff happens... and it ends up being 11:00PM before I even sit down and start noodling ideas around in my head.

For those who are regular followers of these pages, you've probably noticed that I tend to post "in the middle of the night," US time... because that tends to be the soonest I can actually set aside a contiguous block of time to create a blog post.

I've more or less given up on doing any significant writing, earlier in the day. I've stopped fighting it, simply acknowledging that there is too much other stuff clamoring for my attention.

Instead, I now sit down when the house is finally quiet and use my "wind down time" to try to create something bloggish.

Yes, I have repeatedly stated that I love writing... and that's definitely still true! But I always end up coming face to face with the reality that this is basically a hobby and I need to put the bulk of my attention into things that actually pay the bills.

Whereas it would be nice to set priorities according to what I most enjoy doing, that's still not a luxury I can afford; that this household can afford. So, writing is a hobby that allows me to put a few dollars here and there into a kind of "savings account" knows to most people as "Hive Power," with the hope that if I keep doing this for another five or ten years (or more) there might actually be a bit of a "nest egg" here.

But if there isn't, that's really OK, too... because the "wind down time" is helping me get better sleep!

So I'm going to leave it at that and hopefully come up with some rather more interesting subject matter by tomorrow!

Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of your week!

Timing preparation before going to bed, when younger found it impossible to sleep through, a proper rested sleep with reminders popping into mind during sleeping hours.

Diary next to the bed never helped, took forever to learn to stand outside for half an hour alone before going to bed sorting out thoughts. Still only sleep around six to seven hours a little better making it more or less all the way through the night.

Happy dreams, enjoy the month of June, lovely photography accompanying content once again!

My goals are not only to write a blog in the morning nice and early but also to write it in an hour and no more. I rarely achieve both, there are also so many interruptions and although I felt lots of angst, I now run with it. What the heck. Regards Angie

I fall asleep with music (headphones) now and I love it. Only started a year ago and it is beautiful!

I think many would be happier here if they realized Steemit/Hive never promised to be a living wage job per se. I enjoy it as a hobby where I make extra cash. Cant beat it.

I take time before I retire. I do my best writing when everyone has gone to bed and my body begins to slow down, allowing for thoughts to meld to one another into sentences.

Just like you, if I try doing it during the day, it never seems to work. It has taken me forever to figure this out.

Thanks for the words. I am glad it is not just me.

So soothing to read everything you wrote. 🧡
