Balcony Gardening #1 ... How it all started

2020 will be a year we will never forget. The whole world is turned upside down. In February I arrived in my second home in the Philippines. The original plan was to stay here for 3 months and then quickly go back for a month to Belgium. After one month here, the lockdown started. I live in a small place on the island of Cebu. Since the lockdown it's really a struggle to find food here. Just before it all started, there was an outbreak of swine flu. So no pork meat available in the supermarket. Meanwhile we're 4 months later, and still no meat in the supermarket. Okay, no problem ... I don't need meat every day. But then let's look for healthy food ... The litle amount of veggies and fruit you see in the supermarkt are already rotten.

Because I have an autoimmune disease, it's not possible for me to go to the local market. Trying to stay positive I decided to start growing a few things by myself. Sadly I don't have a garden, but I have a balcony. This was all new to me, I never had green fingers, never grew anything, ... So this was a complete jump in the dark. The internet was a big help because I had to learn everything. And now I really love it. It's gives you such a good feeling seeing things growing and the moment you prepare the food and you're about to taste it ... Yummie!

I will write several little postings on how you can do the same. I use a lot of kitchen leftovers to start growing new plants. Last week I made my own bread (in the Airfryer), added some cold cuts and a topping of soy sprouts. Healthy and cheap food.

See you next time for another story of #balconygardening!

Learning new things is always a good thing, and feeding yourself makes it even better.

I love the look of your air fryer bread, I'm going to have to look that up. I have a bread machine, and eat nothing but homemade, but an occasional smaller batch specific to sandwiches would be good for me. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm also planning on writing some postings about the Airfryer. A lot of people only use it to make snacks, but I make a lot of things in it. Love that machine :)

I love these kinds of posts. Not only do you get to see how people can be such problem solvers for their obstacles they must overcome. But it also gives the reader a jump start on how to solve their own!

Looking forward to hearing how you do it and the recipe for the airfryer bread as well if are willing to share it

Next thing on my to do list is recipes for the Airfryer :) Glad you like my post.

Ah, the invasion of the little pots. Looking good and inspiring.

What a great use of the space that you do have! If you could get some hanging pots for the posts, you might be able to grow some things "up" as well!

that's really nice! Sounds like taking care of plants makes you happy as well as healthy. I'm growing food for the first time too. A handful of veggies makes me so happy.

Excellent initiative, taking advantage of the spaces you have at your disposal and that can alleviate your need. Nothing like what we have directly harvested and cultivated. My mother has a farm in the countryside and harvests a lot of her food, it's fabulous. Thank you for showing us and teaching us, I will wait for your next publications. I love the picture of the toast with the avocados, ummmm, one of my favorite fruits. @positive-mind

this all looks somewhat familiar 😄

How wonderful!
We always need to take advantage of the situation around us in the best possible way.
All my plants die on me, but at least my other family members know how to keep them alive :)
I have a very small garden and this year except of roses we had cherry tomatoes, peppers and some parsley :)

Hello, I was the same. I never managed to keep any plant alive. But now I'm really dedicated to it and make sure i take care of them every day. The best way for me is to start with easy plants who grow easily. So that gives me some room to make mistakes :)

Glad you decided to grow some of your own food - it can make a big difference!
There are a lot of plants you can grow from scraps like green onions, romaine lettuce celery and much more.

If you save your seeds too or think of how much food you can get from a inexpensive package of seeds!

Hope you have a lot of success with your balcony gardening!
