Perhaps the world is more dangerous, or maybe we are more fearful? Hard to say. We tend to be threatened by what we know and what we know is what the media have told us. They collect the worst of the world and make it look like it is normal.

Yes, there is some truth to that too. But when it comes to socializing with strangers in the city: "better safe than sorry", I'm always told. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, but that's probably because I am young. My parents always scold me for that.
