As a traveler and enthusiastic Sommelier, I am thrilled to see when someone is looking for "underdogs" in the wine industry. My philosophy is to "search for stars elsewhere than in the sky." I will not lie. I was more than impressed by the wines from Italy. After all, they have one of the oldest cultivation heritage, right. But then I found this gem, just above the border - Slovenia.
Vineyards in Slovenia are amazing.
This small country is just showing itself on all radars, and I can guarantee you, it will amaze you more than any other country. When it comes to wine, they take it extremely seriously. I have tried so many great Slovenian labels and what impressed me the most is their style and surroundings of the vineyards. Slovenia is rich in nature terms, and you can taste that in every glass. Let's remember that Slovenia is small, and you can degustate it in a week. Wrong! This small country has so many contrasts to offer that it will leave you speechless. Form the Mediterranean to continental clime, from marl soil to vulcanic soil, and when it comes to techniques...
In Slovenia, you can find some of the most notorious organic wine producers. Not only that, if you check Decanter, Finger Lakes, and wine reviews, you will see how good wines from Slovenia can compete with others.
What do I like the most? Their boutique appearance, I guess. We were impressed by a small local wine producer Sturm, a well-known winemaker in Slovenia but still so boutique. Old small wine cellar and his style - perfection in every bottle. In Slovenia, they are not trying to be Bordeaux but rather be original. Moreover, this is why I think Slovenia deserves to be on your list the most.
What about food? Now we can start talking. We have the best female chef - Ana Roš, a few Michelin restaurants, and many other small family-run restaurants. The cuisine is kinds of unique as well, you know. Lately, there is a movement to renew traditional Slovenian cuisine, which is excellent. For a foodie like myself, this is the destination to be!
