As for the insect life. Sounds familiar. Such beautiful little bugs. And such a nuisance! We currently have an absolute plague of mites. So bad that of 40 chickens we are getting a grand total of 3 to 4 eggs a day

Eggs are a staple for us so it's no joke. A new friend just gave me a "paint" to make with oil and dish liquid but it's very labour intensive as the entire area has to be painted. Every day. For two weeks. We'll see....
Oh that sounds like the most tedious thing ever, I really hope it does the trick for you. Mites are the worst! When I kept honeybees I really had to fight with them. Looking forward to an update when you break into the double digits of eggs again!
