Sometimes You Need to Upscale: Why Size Matters in electrical wiring ⚡🔌

in Homesteading • 2 days ago

Have you thought of how important those written values on electrical equipment that you get are if you are not accustomed to electrical science as a subject?

Well, those values are more than just numbers; they are the reason why we don't blow our homestead or houses off. These stipulated numbers have been measured according to a standard to ensure we use what is most suitable for different scenarios.

You don't have to overthink these things if you are going to get any kind of lasting success with any of this equipment. It is not about the looks of things, but it is more about how compatible those parts will be.

I had a knife-edge changeover replaced cause of this very reason, the changeover was installed to support the pumping machine, so whatever supply was coming from any parts of the house, it first entered that changeover before going to the pumping machine box.

Now, what I had there before was a small changeover, and that's not just because of its size but also because of the specification, which has been boldly stated on it to ensure that electricians who want to use it will fully understand the capacity.

But, in my struggle to save money, I decided to use the smallest size, believing that it wasn't going to do much work since it is just a machine that turns out I was wrong for a machine of 1.5 horsepower that was nowhere near enough.

Within a short period of time, the changeover was already scattered, most of its parts had melted away, leaving exposed parts which could be dangerous to me or anyone coming close by.

To fix this I had to put my greed in check and ensure I got the very best size and quality for this purpose, while I used to have a (2p,32A) changeover in place I had to move to something bigger which means using something more above that value like the (3p, 100A) changeover that I use now.

You can't get the best work if you think about your pocket more than the safety and effectiveness of what you are fixing.

Hope you've learnt quite a few things from my experience cause I have learnt the hard way myself.
