Working in Our cassava Farm, Clearing and Keeping watch

in Homesteading7 days ago

Hello Hive

It's another sunny afternoon and I have basically ran under a shade for safety. I really can't wait for all these farming work to be over so that we can rest at home completely from this daily scourging sun.
We completed our beans harvest yesterday and we are now left with rice and Sorghum harvest.

The harvest has been moving very slowly, even more slowly than I thought. We have very few hands in the farm as my two brothers who are much stronger and often help out with the more difficult tasks had to travel out of town for some commitment. Myself and dad has been left with the harvest task since this week. My other sister is barely a teenager and has no experience with doing any farm work.

Today rather than going to the rice farm with my dad, I'm here at our cassava farm instead.

Ever since we started harvesting rice I only assisted dad with cutting the part of the farm that is much clearer and easier to handle. Some parts of the rice farm were overtaken by weeds and whenever these thorns grow in between rice farms it becomes very difficult to cut the rice plants. It's such a hard labour hence daddy suggested to exempt me from such.

He hired some labourers that have accompanied him to the rice farm and as we speak now they are under the sun cutting the plants.

Tomorrow will be the day for threshing and winnowing. Myself and the other women labours will take care of that task. Winnowing and beating rice plant is often left for the women to do and by this time tomorrow you all will see us doing that task.

Our cassava farm is here needing some care and since it's something I could do i decided fo engage myself here. Cassava farms need care especially in dry seasons like this. We need to clear off any surrounding bushed and debris that can attract forest fire into the farm to devour the plants. Once fire engulfs this cassava farm here there will be nothing to harvest the coming year.

I was able to beat down some bushes. While every other plants often dies in this season, the cassava plants often survive the harsh weather to continue their growth in to following year. This is only possible if they do not get attacked wild fires or gracing animals.

See you all at our Rice Threshing Tomorrow.

Thank you for this valuable information.

I learned something new and I am now interested in trying some cassava.

I did a quick search and apparently you can get it at some local specialty store. I have no idea on the cost but I will find out.
