My time in Ecuador – A travel report – part 5
This is part 5 of my travel report from Ecuador. Here you can find the first part with the arrival, initial difficulties and a big challenge for me, the second part with my time in the rainforest, the third part with the journey across the Andes to the Pacific coast and the fourth part which takes us along the coast to the north.
Today we leave Atacames and the coast and make our way to the Andes for the last time. The journey is coming to an end and there are only a few days left before the flight back to Germany. Not a pleasant prospect.
We spend a day in Otavalo and visit the market. Then it's off to the centre of the world at noon and at the end we get to see the old town of Quito at night before the plane takes off.
Otavalo
One thing I've really appreciated over the last few weeks has been a hammock. So we decided to make a stopover in Otavalo and visit the famous market to buy one. The colourful selection was overwhelming and I also bought a poncho and a hoodie. Of course, not all of these things fit in the rucksack, so we also had to get a bag.
Unfortunately there are no photos of the market but of a strange phenomenon that I have never seen before. A rainbow cloud. If anyone can explain to me how something like this is created, I'd be delighted to receive a comment.
I would have liked to see more of Otavalo, but as I said, my time in Ecuador is coming to an end and we have to move on. So off we went on the next bus to Quito, where we arrived in the evening and were able to move into our accommodation in a friend's flat.
The journey took us along Lago San Pablo and the Imbabura volcano, an impressive sight.

The equator
One last trip to the surrounding area is a must, because if you're already at the equator, you want to see it and be on both halves of the planet at the same time. As several places claim to be on the equator, we simply visited both.

The monument cannot be overlooked and points to the centre of the world. In fact, it is probably about 200 metres south of the equator.

The true equator runs through the grounds of this museum, as you can see from the shadows cast by the sundial and also try out some physical experiments. Unfortunately, I can't show you this because the battery in my camera gave up at that moment.
Quito's old town at night
The last evening in Ecuador, the camera is loaded and we go back to the old town and enjoy the atmosphere as the crowning glory of this unforgettable trip. The night is short, the taxi leaves for the airport at three in the morning.
The flight back
And then the moment arrives that nobody is looking forward to. The end of the journey. The end of seven unforgettable weeks that still characterise my life today.
I couldn't share all the experiences here, but I hope I have whetted some people's appetite for Ecuador and not only refreshed my own memories, but also given you an insight into life 20 years ago.
And now I say goodbye and board my little plane to Bogota, from there on to Caracas and back to Frankfurt.

Mi tiempo en Ecuador – Un informe de viaje – parte 5
Esta es la quinta parte de mi informe de viaje desde Ecuador. Aquí puedes encontrar la primera parte con la llegada, dificultades iniciales y un gran reto para mí, la segunda parte con mi tiempo en la selva tropical, la tercera parte con el viaje a través de los Andes hasta la costa del Pacífico y la cuarta parte, que nos lleva hacia el norte a lo largo de la costa.
Hoy dejamos Atacames y la costa y nos dirigimos a los Andes por última vez. El viaje llega a su fin y sólo quedan unos días antes del vuelo de regreso a Alemania. No es una perspectiva agradable.
Pasamos un día en Otavalo y visitamos el mercado. Luego nos vamos al centro del mundo a mediodía y al final veremos el casco antiguo de Quito por la noche antes de que despegue el avión.

Una cosa que aprecié mucho en las últimas semanas fue una hamaca. Así que decidimos hacer una parada en Otavalo y visitar el famoso mercado para comprar una. La selección de colores era abrumadora y también compré un poncho y una sudadera con capucha. Por supuesto, no todos estos artículos cabían en mi mochila, así que tuve que comprar también una bolsa.
Por desgracia, no hay fotos del mercado, pero sí de un extraño fenómeno que no había visto nunca. Una nube arco iris. Si alguien puede explicarme cómo se crea algo así, estaré encantado de recibir un comentario.
Me hubiera gustado ver más de Otavalo, pero como ya he dicho, mi estancia en Ecuador estaba llegando a su fin y teníamos que irnos. Así que nos fuimos en el siguiente autobús a Quito, donde llegamos por la noche y pudimos instalarnos en el piso de unos amigos.
El viaje nos lleva a lo largo del Lago San Pablo y el volcán Imbabura, un espectáculo impresionante.

Una última excursión a los alrededores es imprescindible, porque si ya se está en el ecuador, se quiere verlo y estar en las dos mitades del planeta al mismo tiempo. Como varios lugares afirman estar en el ecuador, nos limitamos a visitar ambos.

El monumento no puede pasarse por alto y señala el centro del mundo. De hecho, se encuentra probablemente a unos 200 metros al sur del ecuador.

El verdadero ecuador atraviesa los terrenos de este museo, como se puede ver por la sombra proyectada bajo el reloj de sol y también probar algunos experimentos físicos. Lamentablemente, ya no puedo mostrárselo porque la batería de mi cámara se agotó en ese momento.

La última noche en Ecuador, la cámara está cargada y volvemos al casco antiguo a disfrutar del ambiente como broche de oro de este viaje inolvidable. La noche es corta, el taxi parte hacia el aeropuerto a las tres de la madrugada.
Vuelo de regreso
Y entonces llega el momento que nadie espera. El final del viaje. El final de siete semanas inolvidables que han marcado mi vida hasta el día de hoy.
No podría compartir aquí todas mis experiencias, pero espero haber abierto el apetito de algunos por Ecuador y no sólo haber refrescado mis propios recuerdos, sino también haberles dado una idea de cómo era la vida hace 20 años.
Y ahora me despido y subo a mi avioncito rumbo a Bogotá, de allí a Caracas y de vuelta a Frankfurt.

Sí, todo en poco espacio, eso es lo que me ha gustado. Sólo espero que se conserve la belleza y no se pierda todo a manos de la industria maderera, la petrolera y los mineros.
Bueno, para eso debemos hacer lo que esta en nuestras manos...yo por ejemplo medito mucho para levantar la vibracion del pais. Si tuviera otras herramientas créeme las usara. Kameraakkus sind bei mir auch immer ein Thema: Ich habe immer ein Backup-Akku dabei. 😉 Mein Fotorucksack wiegt z.Z. 15kg! Das wird schon knapp für das Handgepäck.
15kg? Gut, den Unterschied sieht man aber auch.
Die Wolke kann ich mir bis heute nicht erklären, vermute irgendwas mit Kondensstreifen oder so. Affinity Photo hab ich genutzt, aber nur zum Zuschneiden und Farben etwas auffrischen.
