East of Babylon and South of Baghdad lies what is thought to be the first major settlement in recorded history, the Sumerian city of Kish. Kish was the capital city during the Ubaid period, which was somewhere between 6500BC and 3800BC, however the kingship moved from place to place over the centuries. [1,2]

The first Sumerian Kings ruled for extremely long periods. The first King Alulim supposedly reigned for 28,800 years. His successor Alalngar ruled for even longer, 36,000 years. [3,4]
