Well now, I can't really say I was expecting that. With the regular NCAA football season over, things are starting to gear up for bowl season. It wasn't very surprising that Michigan State severed ties with Johnathan Smith as their head coach, though they had to buy out a bit of his contract to do it. I think the one that really hit us out of left field was the University of Michigan firing of head coach Sherrone Moore.
It's not the Wolverines had a bad season, but it probably wasn't what they were hoping for. Plus, they lost to Ohio State and no matter how the season goes, that's one thing that the fans simply cannot tolerate.
It appears though that things are not always what they seem. Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, more has come out about the story that is about as juicy as the tabloids could ever hope for.
Apparently, Sherrone was having an affair with a young lady and got her pregnant. The young lady turned over her "complaint" to the school and that is what prompted them to fire Moore. That probably doesn't sound so scandalous these days. People cheat all the time, and people get pregnant all the time. Heck, coaches lose their jobs all the time. Water's wet, the sky is blue, life goes on.
Well, Moore didn't take it so well, went to his mistresses house with a knife. Threatened her, threatened to hurt himself, and found himself in jail one day out from coaching the number 18 team in the nation.
Now, being a Michigan State fan, I don't have a lot of room to point fingers. That Larry Nassar stuff is going to stick with us for a long time just like the Jerry Sandusky stuff will stick with Penn State for a long time.
I certainly have no love for U of M, but it sad that things had to turn out this way. No doubt the school will land on their feet. The big money alumni in Ann Arbor will see to that. It's just an interesting footnote in what has been a tumultuous time ever since the hiring of Jim Harbaugh.
Meanwhile, if you actually want to focus on the games, the top 25 bowls start on December 19th with number 9 Alabama taking on number 8 Oklahoma in the first round of the college football playoff.
If you don't care so much about the top 25 teams and you just want to get your last college football fix in before the end of the season, the LA Bowl kicks off tomorrow at 8 PM with Boise State facing Washington. After that the next bowl is next week when we see the Salute to Veterans Bowl with Troy facing Jacksonville State.
They continue to roll from that point forward. I'll give you more updates next week. There are also a few bowls that have yet to find a full schedule since Notre Dame and a handful of other schools have opted to decline their bowl bid.
I think upheaval in the college football world is a bit of an understatement!
