Today marks the start of the World Baseball Classic with the match between Chinese Taipei and Australia, both teams belonging to Group C along with one of the big favourites and reigning champions, Japan. In this edition, the 20 participating teams will be organised into four groups, of which Group D could be considered the most evenly matched due to the presence of Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and the Netherlands, who will battle it out for the two places that will allow them to advance to the next round.

Several of the favourites have already warmed up and are ready to claim the title of "title contenders". The United States, the Dominican Republic, Japan and Venezuela are the teams that, on paper, should be considered strong contenders for the championship. Without underestimating the potential of the other teams, the aforementioned teams have a manager and pitching staff with proven quality in the MLB, so these teams are expected to advance past the first phase of the tournament and then face off in the following rounds on their way to the final.
A dream final would be between the United States and the Dominican Republic, which could happen as long as both teams play well and there are no surprises. These teams are exceptionally strong, and pitching will likely be the key factor in determining which one lifts the championship trophy. In the case of Venezuela and Japan, I think they will perform well during the tournament and will not be easy opponents, especially in the final stages. In fact, the Venezuelan team will have to face the Dominican Republic in the first phase, which could also be a determining factor in a possible match in which both teams will give it their all.

When it comes to the road ahead, the Dominican team may have a slightly tougher path, but I believe the team's potential allows us to think big. I would like to see this Dominican team play against Japan, as I believe it would be a kind of early final. Any surprises? Teams such as Puerto Rico, Italy and Mexico could put up a fight and, why not, knock out one of the big teams. So, with just a few hours to go, all that remains is to wait for the cry of "Play Ball" and enjoy a classic that is sure to bring plenty of excitement.
