Aceh Pidie is one of the largest shallot producers today. From my observations from several trips that I have seen, onion farmers in Aceh are almost on average happy living by farming onions.
Shallots can reach tens of tons per harvest, with a relatively expensive price. Even now, many people in Aceh have switched professions to become onion farmers. These onions are exported to various neighboring countries.
Aceh shallots are different from the Bombay onions grown in the Indies and Thailand. The difference is the taste and aroma. Because this onion has a very small texture compared to Indian onions.
