Horta is the main city on the island of Faial, Azores. This small city has a marina covered in paintings. These have been painted by sailors who make stop here to take a break and stock up with supplies before crossing the Atlantic. I think these thousands of paintings is what Horta is known for. Definitive worth to spend time looking at all the painting and all the boats
If you walk a little further, you will come to Praia do Porto Pim. Behind there is a peninsula where its possible to drive or walk to the top. We did that one afternoen. It’s quite a steep walk. On top you get a great view of the sea and when walking downwards on the opposite side, we get a great view of Horta.
After enjoying the view of the crater we had to walk a path back to the beach in Praia do Porto Pim. Back in town by the marina we get the view of the highest mountain in Portugal - Montanha do Pico is Portugal’s (2351). The mountain has the same name as the island – Pico. The two islands are close. Only a short boatride. You can stay in Horta and take a daytrip to Madalena, the main city on Pico. We never grew tired of this view.
