I have been wanting to ask you for a while, how do you dispose of waste? All kinds - food scraps and everything considered organic waste, then plastic, paper, and everything else... Oh my goodness, the amount of plastic we throw away, and we even try to buy fruits and vegetables at the market because in supermarkets, you can hardly buy anything unless it is wrapped in endless layers of plastic. Well, I am exaggerating, but yes, my husband and I realise that it is ridiculous to have so much plastic waste, and we are only two people in our family now.

A few weeks ago, the city where I live launched an information campaign about home and community composting, and as part of the initiative, the organisers (the city council in collaboration with the CREA Consortium) distributed these small brown home trash cans. I think it is a good idea; we have to dispose of waste properly and do something good for the environment. What I didn't know was that I couldn't throw some things in the brown bin, which I had been doing until now. Yes, we have been sorting plastic, paper, and glass for many years, sorting everything separately at home and throwing it away in the appropriate containers. But the thing is that everything else, which didn't belong in any other category, was mistakenly placed in the brown bin, where only compostable organic matter should go.
The mistake comes from the other municipality where we lived until a few months ago, where even the mixed waste was deposited into the container labelled as organic waste. There, they made no distinction. On top of that, I saw more than once the street cleaning staff throwing plastic bottles into this bin, supposedly dedicated only to organic waste. It seems no one bothered to explain to the citizens the good habits of properly disposing of their trash. Thanks to this information campaign, I learned what I can separate for the compost and the rest (mixed waste) is going to the grey container.

Me parece una buena idea; tenemos que depositar los residuos correctamente y contribuir al medio ambiente. Lo que no sabía es que no podía tirar algunas cosas al contenedor marrón, como lo había hecho hasta ahora. Sí, llevamos muchos años separando plástico, papel y vidrio, separando todo en casa y tirándolo a los contenedores correspondientes. Pero el problema es que todo lo demás, que no pertenecía a ninguna otra categoría, se depositó por error en el contenedor marrón, donde solo debe ir la materia orgánica compostable.
El error viene del otro municipio donde vivíamos hasta hace unos meses, donde incluso los residuos mixtos se depositaban en el contenedor marrón. Allí no hacían distinción. Además, vi más de una vez al personal de limpieza de calles tirar botellas de plástico en este contenedor, supuestamente dedicado solo a residuos orgánicos. Parece que nadie se molestó en explicar a los ciudadanos los hábitos adecuados para desechar la basura correctamente. Gracias a esta campaña informativa aprendí qué puedo separar para el compost y el resto (residuos mezclados) va al contenedor gris.
This is the amount of paper and cardboard waste we accumulate in a week, more or less. I like to store it in paper bags, reusing the ones we get from stores or, in this case, from the bakery. The amount of plastic waste we accumulate is, unfortunately, much higher. We have the paper and plastic waste in the storage room, by the kitchen, so we have it close. The brown bin for the organic waste and the grey one for the mixed waste are both in the kitchen. This means that now I have four different bins/bags/spots for waste. Oh, plus the glass. 😂

Tenemos el papel y el plástico en el trastero junto a la cocina, así que lo tenemos cerca. El contenedor marrón para la basura orgánica y el gris para la basura mixta están en la cocina. It is not difficult to learn how to separate waste and place it in the appropriate container. What's more, they come in different colours: organic waste goes in the brown container; mixed waste in the grey; paper and cardboard in the blue; plastic and metal containers in the yellow; and glass in the green. We, as individuals, can't force or expect everyone to do it right, but it doesn't mean we should do it wrong. The most I am afraid of (bothered with) is the amount of plastic waste...
No es difícil aprender a separar los residuos y depositarlos al contenedor correspondiente. Además, son de diferentes colores: los residuos orgánicos van al contenedor marrón, los mixtos al gris; el papel y el cartón al azul; los envases de plástico y metal al amarillo; y el vidrio al verde. Nosotros, como individuos, no podemos obligar ni esperar que todos lo hagan bien, pero eso no significa que nosotros mismos debamos hacerlo mal. Lo que más me preocupa es la cantidad de residuos plásticos...

I would love to have a place to throw away all the organic waste. We don't have it here in Portugal and it all goes to the general bin together with the unidentified ones. We do have separate bins for paper, plastic/tins and glass and I do separate it all. No biggie. And we also have the most of the plastics! Much less of paper or glass.
But it pains me to see the organics go to "waste" especially that since I was raised in the countryside chickens were eating all that. If not, it was going to the compost pile and then was dug up in the garden as fertilizer.
But I wonder.... that brown bin has huge holes, how do you throw small fruit or veggie peels? In separate little bags? They are not gonna fall from it?
I would also like to see separate bins for textiles.
Same here. The chickens would eat the peels of the vegetables or fruits, or it was piled for the compost in the garden, and the rest of the fish or meat or other cooked food - our cats or dogs ate just normal food back in time hahaha
So much plastic packaging everywhere... and it doesn't seem to stop, as everything is wrapped and packed in plastic 🤐
Hehe, yes, the design of the bin with the holes is strange, so a bag is needed there; as the woman who informed us said, preferably in biodegradable bags (but in the absence of those, a normal bag can also be used).

Bueno, cuando vivía en Argentina, los residuos orgánicos los colocábamos en un lugar especial en el jardín, y criábamos lombrices para ayudar a la tierra. En Argentina no dividen los residuos como aquí.
Cuando me mudé, vi que todo el mundo dividía los residuos y me pareció una idea excelente. Siempre presto atención a ello, sin embargo me parece que la cantidad de plástico que se tira es demasiada, se debería reducir el consumo. Y por lo menos aquí se respeta bastante la división, no el 100% pero bastante.
Toda idea que ayude al medio ambiente y a la gestión de los residuos no biodegradables es bienvenida.

Entonces en Argentina es como en el país donde viven mis padres. Ellos también tienen un lugar en el jardín donde colocan los restos de comida, verduras, frutas, etc, porque luego lo pueden utilizar como compost para las plantas que tienen. Y lo resto, no se separa nada.
El problema fue que al tirar comida vinieron ratas... tuvimos que abandonar el emprendimiento... pero lo hicimos por mucho tiempo y era genial! Tierra fértil y buena para la huerta que teníamos.

Ay, ratas. 😦 He tenido malas experiencias con ratas, jajaja, porque tenía una gata, era mi gata favorita, que defendía a sus gatitos y de los perros grandes. Y cazaba todo, pero cuando una rata la mordió, la herida se infectó, y mucho. Pero con el tiempo y los cuidados, la herida se curó 😇 Y otra historia con ratas, ya aquí en España, una rata se metió en la primera casa que alquilamos por unos meses, y quise bloquearla con la mesa del salón para que no se acercara a mi hijo. Sí, logré bloquearla, pero lo malo es que la mesa era de cristal, jajaja.
Las ratas están en todas partes!!!! Lo importante tu gatita se curó y tu hijo está bien... la mesa... bueno pobre mesa...😌

¡Gran iniciativa! Informar a la comunidad es la más importante de todo, sin educación difícilmente podemos llegar a mejorar.
Es varios municipios del país se gestiona de forma consciente el reciclaje de residuos orgánicos. Además de separarlos y desecharlos en el contenedor adecuado, en algunos lugares los contenedores marrones cuentan con una especie de llave para que solo puedan ser utilizados por vecinos conscientes que se hayan interesado en ser informados y recibir su bote de basura personal junto a la llave.
No funciona igual en todos los lugares y seguramente sería un problema en ciudades muy grandes, pero seguramente esto dependa de la población concretamente.
¡Mucho ánimo con la gestión de esos 5 contenedores!

Ahh, we don't have bins at home. All our wastes go to a plastic bag which we also throw away in the bin near us and every morning, a big truck will get it to collect them and I'm not really sure where they throw them. And seriously, they are all mix of everything. We don't use paper bag in here as well, but plastic or a sack bag for big items. We usually used these sacks as our waste bins. It's cool how organized everything in there, though not all can follow, still, the whole thing us amazing.
At least the truck passes by every day and collects the waste. It is also good. Maybe when the country will have regulations and companies to separate, recycle and manage all the waste, just then the campaign to separate the trash can start.
Actually in some places in some Municipalities, those different kind of bins with different color exist, like in Pinamalayan Park. We also have bins in public places but its just one color and they're big.
This is a very important issue, luckily we don't have so much waste in our house. In terms of food, we give the peels of the fruits to our neighbors who keep cows or goats 😂
That's a lucky thing, to have a neighbor with cows or goats. That's how it should be, but in cities it's a bit more challenging haha
We haven't gotten to the organic separation yet.
We still only have two types of bins where I am. One is for glass, certain plastics, cardboard, magazines, newspapers (maybe something else, I forget) but just labeled as "recycles" and the other bin is for everything else.
This started many years back and then a long time later, I read that a lot of the recycles ended up in a pile somewhere or sent to some other country, because although they were considered recyclable, there were really not enough industries set up to take care of it or use it, because it was much more expensive to recycle things like plastic than it was to create fresh materials. Since then, I have wondered if it was even helping anything. I don't know the answer to that.
Yeah, it is always a question, what the companies that manage the waste will do. Properly recycle or in the end, it all would end up in the same landfill? Sometimes the recycling process costs more than making new materials, but that part is on them to resolve. Our responsibility is to try to use plastic as less as possible and try to separate the waste. I guess the Earth was happier a century ago, without plastic. 😅

Sí, y también que luego las empresas responsables para la gestión correcta de los residuos lo hagan bien.
El tratamiento de los residuos en Cuba es un problema serio, sobre todo aquí en la Habana. Solo diré que no se separa nada. Aunque lo hagamos en casa, a la hora de botarla solo hay un bote (a veces ni uno) y toda la basura se amontona en las esquinas ocasionando serios problemas de salubridad. Pienso que sea difícil de imaginar para ustedes, pero tristemente es así y lo peor es que no veo una pronta solución a ese problema. Ojalá algún día tomemos conciencia de la necesidad de clasificar los residuos y actuemos en consecuencia. No es sólo problema del gobierno, es responsabilidad de todos 🤗.
Excelente 👌 Yo suelo hacerlo por mi cuenta acá en casa (Cuba) mi padre me enseñó desde pequeña a separarlos y a devolver a la naturaleza todo lo que son cáscaras y frutas., aunque todo el mundo no lo hace por acá.
Me alegra saber que en España hay una mayor educación y comunidad pendintes a esto, y me sumare seguramente en cuanto esté allá con mi familia.

Sí, nosotros solos también podemos hacer el abono orgánico, si tenemos espacio para ello. Lo hace mi mamá también.
