A Visit to Tapton House, Chesterfield, Derbyshire

in Photography3 years ago (edited)

This past year to keep me sane with all the lockdowns, I've been researching the areas around me and going and visiting them, especially if they are a bit quirky. I usually look at 'Atlas Obscura' or rifle through all the abandoned places forums to see what's in my area.

Tapton House is a place that I've not been since my childhood. It is the former home of railway pioneer George Stephenson. He built the first steam-hauled passenger railway and designed the famous locomotive, Locomotion.

He lived at Tapton House from 1838 until he died in 1848. He left the house to the town of Chesterfield. It was then used as a school and later on, a college.

I used to play netball here when my own school paid a visit. The grounds are now open to the public with some lovely blossom trees and lawns. There is a labyrinth there but unfortunately, we didn't have time to look for it. Something for next time.

What an amazing place to have such a spacious school with nature all around, the atmosphere must be very nice.

Apparently, it's empty now but they are advertising it as office space. I'd love to buy it .... if only I had the money!

It would be great to live or have an office there, but it must be very expensive.
