My #seaphotography entry

Port Owen is quite a special little place because it isn’t actually a town. It’s really a suburban village Centered around a sailing marina, not on the ocean, but on the estuary of a river.

Our family have a home close to the marina so we spent the weekend at Port Owen Marina and enjoyed the peace, tranquility and beauty of all that the Estuary and marina has to offer. The estuary is found on the lower part of the Berg River which runs for 100s of kilometres inland. It’s one of the major rivers in the Western Cape.

The day started with a walk around the marina observing the various boats moored on their jettys. Our Aunt lives here and was a long time sailor in her youth travelling the world stewarding on larger yachts and later taking guests on cruises through the Caribbean and the Med. These days she tends to know the ins and outs of every owner of every boat that ties up here.

Many boats are locally owned by residents of either Port Owen or further afield in Cape Town. But some are foreigners who happened to reach this coastline during various lockdowns either locally or abroad and are now waiting for the go ahead to leave Port and head on across the Atlantic or towards the Mediterranean.

As we walked to the edge of the marina we join the Berg River, on which Port Owen is found. The fact that the marina is slightly upriver limits the size and depth of the boats that can enter.

We happened to be in time to view the birds relocating from their nighttime roosts upriver, back towards the beach at the river mouth about a kilometre down river. It was quite a sight to behold as thousands of birds just kept flying by in their flocks.

Later that same evening we visited Yokie’s house (our aunts best friend) for sundowners and boy were we in for the show of the day.

Firstly her house is gorgeous! It’s unassuming from the street and looks quaint from the riverside. But inside is something special. Her eye for design, space and a homely yet curated finish is just perfect and exactly what I would love one day.

We could not have asked for a better end to the most beautiful day up our West Coast. South Africa is blessed with much beauty and WE are blessed to get to experience it in all its glory.

We needed duo staying a little longer than anticipated and may have had 1 more drink than we had planned but walking home in the dark was a pleasure after the good evening that we had had.

We can’t ask for more than that.

Sort:

West Coast looks inviting, many yachts in the basin so must be quite busy.

Lovely photography and share of a comfortable looking home!

Hi! It was actually very quiet while we were there. A few fishing boats came and went from other parts of the river but we didn’t see any yachts going out. And 1 couple cleaning their boat. I think most locals are just enjoying the peace after a busy summer on this side. When we can in October it was much busier.

But we loved it. My in-laws will be there this weekend and Aunty Esther really treats us all and caters beautifully!!!

Looks tranquil and a beautiful place to visit, yachts not being able to move around must be frustrating to the owners. If locals are anything like us it's nice to have the town back to oneself, empty of visitors.

Have a great weekend!
