Some misconceptions about growing cannabis that holds back people a little bit is to think that it is an expensive or difficult task, specially because some people have a little trouble taking care of plants because they have never done it before. But really, it is easier than most would think, and here I'm gonna start to give advice to some who might be interested in starting a new project now, since we have plenty of free time at home and it is a pretty healthy habit.
Algunas ideas erróneas de cultivar cannabis que detiene un poco a las personas es pensar que es muy caro, y más que todo a personas que no tienen experiencia cultivando plantas. Es más fácil de lo que creen, y aquí en este post les doy mis consejos a los que estén interesados en empezar este nuevo proyecto, ya que todos tenemos bastante tiempo libre en casa y es un hábito saludable.
To begin with, I want to clarify that I am not an expert, and I have few months trying to grow my plants but I have had a lot of fun doing it, and so that's why i think that more people could discover how great it is to connect with that living thing that you are helping to grow, and dedicating time to it, because it makes you feel good when you can actually watch them grow and develop properly.
Para empezar, quiero aclarar que no soy ningún experto, y tengo sólo meses intentando cultivar mis plantas, aún así, me ha parecido muy divertido, y pienso que más personas podrían descubrir que bien es conectar con ese ser vivo que estás ayudando a crecer, y dedicándole tiempo, porque te hace sentir bien cuando las ves desarrollarse.
To start the list of the five primary recommendations I would give to a new cannabis grower or a person with the intention to do it is:
Para empezar la lista de las cinco recomendaciones primarias que le daría a un cultivador de cannabis nuevo o una persona que quiera empezar a hacerlo son:
• Understand what this plant likes or needs: do a little reading on the internet about the plants needs. For any plant that you might want to grow, it is basic that you realize where it naturally grows, how much water it needs, nutrients, sun, and of course which kind of soil is best for them. If you want to grow cannabis, I would tell you that there's a lot of information on the internet about the requirements of this plant, obviously because of how popular it is. I have read many blogs of experienced growers who give nice advice and tips to grow faster, better, cheaper, and organically.
• Entiende bien qué le gusta a esta planta o qué necesita: lee un poco en internet acerca de las necesidades de la planta. Para cualquier tipo de vegetal que quieras cultivar, es básico que te des cuenta dónde crece naturalmente, cuánta agua necesita, los nutrientes, el sol, y por supuesto cuál es el mejor suelo para ellas. Si quieres cultivar cannabis, te diría que hay mucha información en el internet acerca de las necesidades de esta planta, por supuesto por lo popular que es. He leído en muchos blogs de cultivadores experimentados que dan consejos muy buenos para hacerlas crecer más rápido, mejor, más económico, o más orgánico.
• Start with what you have: there's a lot of cheap materials that you could use as flowerpots. You don't need to spend too much money in the beginning or actually never to get your plants to be healthy. I got cheap plastic flowerpots of approximately ½ L capacity, and then when I got the little plants to a bigger size, I moved them to 10 L flowerpots, in which they are going to be the rest of their lifespan. This is of course, if you are to grow indoors, because if you will grow our plants in a garden, you don't actually need the pots and you can just dig a hole and fill it with the best soil, which you can get from any kind of gardening store, and usually that's not expensive.
• Empieza con lo que tengas: hay muchos materiales muy económicos que puedes utilizar como macetas. No necesitas gastar mucho dinero al principio, o nunca realmente para tener plantas saludables. Yo compré macetas de plástico muy económicas de medio litro de capacidad, y cuando las plantas incrementan su tamaño, las moví a macetas del mismo material pero de diez litros, en donde van a estar el resto de su vida. Esto por supuesto si vas a plantar en espacios cerrados, porque si vas a plantar en el jardín, no necesitas macetas y puedes solamente abrir un agujero en el suelo y llenarlo con el sustrato más apto, que puedes comprar en cualquier tienda de jardinería, usualmente no son caros.
• If you are to grow plants indoors like I did, prepare a space in your house, depending on the amount of plants that you want, take into consideration that cannabis plants can grow largely, reaching heights of almost 2-3 meters or more if you allow them, and wide up to 1 meter or so. They don't like to be so close to one another, so reserve a space so that each plant can have a considerable distance from the other to grow.
• Si plantas adentro de tu casa como hice yo, prepara un espacio adecuado, dependiendo de la cantidad de plantas que quieras, tomando en cuenta que las plantas de cannabis pueden crecer bastante, llegando a alturas de 2 o hasta 3 metros si se los permites, y de ancho algo como un metro. No es adecuado que las plantas estén tan juntas, así que reserva un espacio donde puedan crecer y tener distancia las unas de las otras.
• The part of the plan with the most amount of cannabinoids and psychoactive substances that are used in recreational and medical ways is the flower, and the objective of all the process of growing of cannabis is going to be based geting the plant to blossom fully, for what you would need to read a little bit about the sexes of the plant, and why do you only need female plants to get the big all wanted flowers.
• La parte de la planta con más canabinoides y psicoactivos que se usan de manera recreacional y médica es la flor, por lo que el punto de todo el proceso de cultivo de cannabis va a estar basado en hacer florecer a las plantas al máximo, para lo que vas a tener que leer un poco acerca de los sexos de las plantas, y por qué sólo necesitas plantas hembra para obtener las preciadas flores.
Once you understand that the plant, as any other living thing, has it own stages to fulfill, you have to try and get your plants to flourish, and for that, again, you need to give them the right conditions, taking into consideration the hours of exposition to light that they need in the growing process, the right soil, the right amount of water, the ventilation, and humidity, besides other factors. If you buy the seeds on the internet or in a store, most of the brands in the market work with seeds that are determined to be females, so you don't actually need to wonder about if your plant is going to be a male, female, or hermaphrodite (both sexes contained). But if you get the seed elsewhere, like i did, and you don't know if your plants are going to turn to be girls or boys, you need to ensure certain specific conditions for them to reach the flourishing stage, and then you will know, studying a little bit about the anatomy of the plant, what way does a female looks like and how does a male cannabis plant looks like. Unfortunately you’ll have to give another use to male plants, but you need to put them aside and cut them to avoid pollinating the female plants, preventing them from getting proper flowers.
Una vez entiendas que la planta como cualquier otro ser vivo, tiene sus fases cumplir, tienes que tratar de hacerlas llegar a la floración adecuadamente, y para eso necesitas darle las condiciones adecuadas. Tomando en cuenta las horas de exposición a la luz en el período de crecimiento, el suelo adecuado, la cantidad justa de agua, de ventilación, y humedad, entre otros factores. Si compras semillas en internet o en tiendas especializadas, la mayoría de las marcas en el mercado trabajan con semillas que ya están feminizadas o listas para producir hembras, así que no tienes que preguntarte si las plantas que tienes son machos, hembras o hermafroditas (que contienen los dos sexos). Si consigues las semillas de otra manera, como yo, y no sabes qué sexo tendrán las plantas, tienes que asegurarle las condiciones apropiadas para llegat a la etapa de floración, y en ella, tendrás que estudiar un poco sobre la anatomía de las plantas y cómo lucen. Lastimosamente tendrás que darle otro uso a las plantas macho, pero necesitas apartarlas de las plantas hembra ya que las polinizan y evitan que éstas florezcan propiamente.
• Last tip for today, and this is linked to the first tip, think about the right time of year or season you will start growing your plants, and of course this depends whether you are going to plant them outdoors or indoors. If you are to plant outside, you need to start doing it in the beginning or mid spring, to get the better results and full grown healthy plants approximately in the autumn. If you grow indoors, it is also good to think about the season or time at year depending where in the world you live but for the temperature factor. The cannabis plant does well on a wide range of temperature, but like many other plants, it prefers warm places. My plants started to germinate and grow quickly when the temperature here started to go from 16 to 25 °C degrees, and in summer when they started to go higher than that, they thrived also. But super high heat could go against you too, and stress the plants, so think about that always. If you grow indoors, and use artificial illumination, of course you could do it all year, but then ensuring that the type of light bulb you're gonna use produces also some heat to keep the plants warm in the cold season.
• El último consejo de hoy está conectado con el primero, y es acerca de pensar el momento apropiado del año o la temporada para empezar a plantar el cannabis, y claro está esto depende de si lo vas a hacer en un ambiente exterior o el interior. Si vas a plantar en el exterior, deberías empezar a hacerlo al inicio o la mitad de la primavera, para así obtener los resultados y las plantas crecidas y saludables aproximadamente para en el otoño. Si cultivas en el interior, está bien también pensar en la temporada o el momento de plantar dependiendo también dónde vivas, lo importante es el factor temperatura. El cannabis crece bien en un amplio rango de temperaturas, pero como otras plantas, prefiere sitios cálidos. Mis plantas empezaron a germinar y crecer rápido cuando la temperatura estaba alrededor de los 16 a 25 °C grados, y en verano empezó a subir aún más, las plantas se vigorizan. Muy altas temperaturas pueden ser contraproducentes, ya que las plantas pueden estresarse, así que piensa en eso también. Si cultivas en ambientes interiores, por supuesto lo puedes hacer todo el año, pero entonces asegúrate de que en las temporadas de frío, el bombillo que utilices emita algún tipo de calor, para mantenerlas cálidas.

I might keep writing about my experience with cannabis since I have been trying to make these plants grow and develop for months, and they are just beginning the flowering phase (well, some of them). In this stage I will realize how many of them are males and how many are females.

Great tip on starting with what you have! As someone who has ended up investing a few bucks into my grow, I still try to cut costs, and be resourceful by using what i have, especially when it comes to pots. One thing I would like to add is to stop the plant from growing tall, incorporate training techniques such as LST, and super cropping. With these you can train the plant to grow anyway you want.
