A South Indian delicacy : Moong Dal Payasam

Being a North Indian I really love to relish and cook South Indian dishes. Most of the vegetarian South Indian dishes are vegan by default and have an amazing unique taste and flavours.

For a long time, I didn't post any recipe here but today I prepared a long-awaited recipe MoongDal Payasam. It is a type of dessert or can say Moong Dal Kheer.

I had it several times in a South Indian restaurant but prepared it in my kitchen the first time and it is loved by kids too much.

Moong Dall called mung beans in English? I just search on the internet. But in your picture, that looks different from mung beans and the texture too.

You are right Mung Beans and Moong Dal are the same but the only difference is that Moong Dal is the de-skinned and split form of mung beans.

Looks, delicious Sir! South Indian cuisine is amazing.

I've never prepared this dish before, looks delicious. The difference between north Indian and south Indian food is like the difference between night and day. It's a shame south Indian food has never caught on in the west, but I think it's because of one of the reasons you mentioned, most dishes are already vegetarian/vegan (without ghee).

Most North Americans alos like to have meat in every dish, and they aren't fond of spicy food, so I think that is why north Indian food is just "Indian food" in the USA. It's more mild and there are plenty of chicken dishes, perfect for the American market.

Yes, there are too many differences between north and south Indian dishes. Mostly North India vegetarian dishes are not Vegan while South Indian dishes are.
