Being Distracted, Rivers, Yoga Ashrams, How to Be Mindful and More

I got a little distracted by snow this week. It was a joyful thing to be distracted by - my thoughts focussed on the flakes drifting coolly down to the quiet earth. Funny how nature can be quiet and loud at the same time - quiet, in that it demanded nothing of me, and loud, because it demanded my attention at the same time. Energy goes where attention goes - yesterday, my energy was wholly and completely in the forest. There are worse places to send your energy.

Consequently, I forgot all about my responsiblity for the Mindful Life curation this week, and missed the posting window - hence posting from Lotus Shares instead. I do hope you forgive me.

Focussing on nature as a healer was something in the forefront of @keuudip's post after reading @fenngen's meditation on nature as something that can help us through difficult times. He writes:

A simple example, when dizziness often attacks me due to air and noise pollution in an urban environment, I must immediately run to a more natural environment. Quiet beaches, or hills covered with low forests and bushes, are the places where I run to enjoy the atmosphere without pollution until dizziness disappears and the mind returns clear. Some sports I think also rely heavily on the beauty of nature or comfort provided by nature through the green grassland and trees, natural water pools or lakes, calm clear rivers, waterfalls and rocks with their moss, and etcetera. It all proves that the natural scenery can support the process towards fitness and healing.

Accompanied by beautiful photographs, @keeudip reminds us to focus on the natural world - she needs us as much as we need her.

In this post @heryanna delightfully jokes about dogs and consciousness and shares the natural setting in a visit to an ashram.

I am reminded of the blissful quiet of the snow with this post by @comingalive. In silence, our thoughts can be loud - or we can gain the freedom to simply be present, as I did, joyfully in the forest and the snow falling quietly.

In the 21st century, our days are almost completely filled with things that try and grab our attention. Advertisements, movies, podcasts, music, the list goes on and on of creations that suck our senses away from our bodies. Many of the things we consume are designed to be either visually or auditorially stimulating; a product that sells silence would sit untouched on any shelf. In my opinion, this is why it's so hard to be without these things. When all you have to listen to is the drum of the highway, what do you turn to? Your thoughts. And that's a scary place to find yourself. It's much easier to drown out the mental chatter with your favorite song than to face the music of the voice in your head. I know I succumbed to this, I ended up turning on the radio, which is how you know I'm desperate. Our mind is the loudest place we'll ever know. Full of all of our joy, sadness, positivity, and fear, it's our greatest ally and our biggest foe. The sheer depth of it can make us leery to dive in. I know I definitely need to work on being okay with exploring the mind in the absence of noise. But this is the beauty of the opposite. In practicing absence, we also gain presence.
