There was a time when I used to rely on the kick of chocolate every day to get through the afternoon. Back then I didn’t realise that I was just covering up the symptoms (low energy and fatigue) instead of actually overcoming the root cause of my struggle (like burnt out adrenal glands).
The caffeine in cacao triggers an adrenaline release in our body. Adrenaline is corrosive which is why our liver soaks it up to protect other organs from its harsh effect. When eaten regularly, it can overburden our liver and adrenals unnecessarily. (Find more information on this at Medical Medium)
That doesn’t mean cacao is bad and you should never eat it. It can be fine for you if you are completely healthy and use it only occasionally.
But if you are already facing health challenges it might be a great idea to play with the alternatives like carob powder instead while at the same time working on overcoming the real reasons for your struggles.
After I ditched my chocolate obsession and learned to take the right steps to recover from my health challenges, my energy levels increased naturally without feeling the need to go for stimulants to keep me going.
Nowadays, I still prefer to not use any cacao since whenever I did use it as a little treat, my body often reacted with insomnia and emotional stress - clearly showing me that cacao doesn’t serve me anymore.
Luckily, the alternatives like carob powder or black sapote are just as delicious and don’t make us miss the special chocolate flavour.

Carob chips are so good! There's also this place in my town that does a good carob 'milkshake' with a vegan option... I'm sure that could be done raw as well
