Gambutan is one of the wild plants that grows in bushes. This plant propagates and attaches its tendrils to other plants.
This plant has fruit that is similar to passion fruit, that's why gambutan is also called forest passion fruit, the difference is that gambutan fruit is only the size of a cherry, the taste of the fruit is not far from passion fruit, sweet and fresh. Gambutan has several names such as Rambusa, Timun Padang, wild passion fruit and other names in each region.
In order to better recognize this plant, let's study its morphology together.
ROOT
The root is a taproot with many branches. These root branches contain many brown fibers, so many people think that gambutan plants have fibrous roots.
STEM
The stems are light green when the plant is young and dark green when the plant is old. the stem has a soft texture and the stem spreads to the side (soil) if it does not find other plants to propagate, if it finds other plants to propagate then the tendrils will stick to other plants and the stem will grow upward following the plants attached to it.
LEAF
The leaf is a single leaf that is oval in shape and is split into 3 parts. When young the leaves are light green, with age the leaves and petioles will turn yellow and eventually turn brown. The leaf surface feels rough to the touch because it contains fine hairs and jagged leaf edges, curved leaf shape.
FLOWER
Gambutan plant flowers have a purplish white color that grows at the base of the leaf axils, round in shape, on the petals there is an arch. If the flower is successfully fertilized, the flower will become a fruit, the petals will form a web to protect the peat fruit.
FRUITS AND SEEDS
The Gambutan fruit is wrapped in a net, the young fruit is green and tastes very bitter (when eating the green fruit, the head feels dizzy because of the bitter effect on the young fruit),after that the green fruit will turn yellow, the flesh of the light yellow fruit tastes sweet mixed with sour, after that the fruit becomes dark yellow and some are orange, the taste of this orange flesh is refreshingly sweet, like passion fruit. Inside the fruit there are many seeds that are black when they are old and pale gray when the fruit is young.
The ripe fruit will dry up and the seeds will turn black, because of its distinctive smell and sweet taste, these seeds are eventually eaten by animals such as rats, birds and bats.Eventually these seeds will fall to the ground and grow into new plants.
