A step closer to health

My family and I are lovers of bread and spreads. Most of our mornings we have bread for breakfast and depending on the children's appetite, our spread selections include peanut butter, chocolate spread, strawberry and kaya (coconut jam). As our family grew, my husband and I have also slowly embarked on a healthier lifestyle (we try our best). It's little little decisions like consuming plain peanut butter (without seasoning) or enjoying dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate that slowly move us toward a more conscious awareness on our general health as a family.

Mind you, I don't know about other countries but plain nut butter is expensive here in Malaysia. A good nut butter sans sugar, salt and vegetable oil (as filler) that is about 180ml to 300ml would easily cost from RM15 to RM30. And for a household that consumes nut butter almost on a daily basis, this would definitely add a pinch to the pocket in the long run. And how much does it cost to make your own nut butter? About RM5 depending on what nuts are used. That's easily 300% difference. Insane!

The peanut butter that I previously purchased online had just finished and I remember buying a pack of mix nuts trail, so last Saturday my husband and I decided to make use of the multifunctional blender that a friend of mine gifted us not long ago to make our own nut butter.

It was a pack of 500g mix nuts which included peanuts, walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, cashew nuts, and pumpkin seeds. As it was our first time using the blender, there were a couple of hiccups and so, to ease the blending we decided to add two tablespoons of virgin coconut oil into the mix. The blending went smoothly and so quickly and it felt like all it took was half a second!

As this was our first time experimenting with mixed nuts, I find the taste to be a little too earthy for my liking. So, to offset the taste I've added some dried cranberries, a dash of cinnamon and a pinch of Himalayan sea salt for taste.

Everyone enjoyed it, even my husband made a couple of slices to bring to work and for our firstborn to be brought to school for her tea break.
