Yesterday’s dinner was one of those “I need something different, now” moments. I’d been craving a unique noodle dish all afternoon, so I headed to the Upper Boon Keng area and dined at a little hawker stall doing Chongqing-style noodles with the kind of quiet passion you can taste. Nothing flashy... just a focused menu, a neat signboard, and that comforting sound of sizzling of gyoza, clattering bowls, and people catching up over late dinners.
I ordered their beef noodle and added a fried egg because, well, self-care LOL. The total came to SGD 7.30, which already felt fair before I received the food. When the bowl arrived, it looked like a professionally made serving of food: thin noodles piled high, a nice egg on the side, a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds, leafy greens for color, and generous slices of beef glistening in a dark, fragrant sauce.
First, the noodles, my favorite kind of thin and springy, with a nice chew. They were served “dry” but in that perfect hawker way where there’s a glossy pool of sauce beneath, so every toss picks up savory depth. The seasoning tastes umami with a hint of sweetness and a gentle peppery taste. Nothing overly fiery, just a balanced, moreish base that made it dangerously easy to keep slurping.
The beef was the star and also the surprise. It’s cooked in a style that hovers between braise and jerky... deeply seasoned, slightly chewy at the edges, yet still tender enough to bite through cleanly. Each slice was packed with flavor, as if it had spent a long time in a marinade. I loved the contrast: concentrated beefiness with flavor of soy, spices, and a light caramel note, then the smokiness of toasted sesame for crunch.
That egg add-on? Worth every extra cent. Fried in olive oil, it carried a gentle aroma that taste nicely with the sauce. The edges were cook nicely as well, the yolk just set so it could coat the noodles. A perfect bite was easy to build: a tangle of noodles, a strip of beef, a bit of leafy green, and a swipe through the egg—silky, savory, and so satisfying.
Portion-wise, this is a legit dinner bowl. I told myself to save a few bites for later… then promptly finished it without putting my chopsticks down. The stall’s vibe helped: practical seating, a steady trickle of customers, and cooks who move with that calm, focused to achieve the quality noodle dish. You can tell they care; even small touches like the sesame sprinkle and tidy plating make a difference.
If I had one tiny wish, I’d ask for just a spoon more sauce to stretch to the very last noodle—mostly because I’m a saucy-noodle person. But honestly, at SGD 7.30, the value is already excellent, and the flavors are dialed in. It’s the kind of bowl that comforts without being heavy, interesting without shouting.
Overall: a passionate hawker find that hits the spot for unique beef noodles. Superb quality, fair price, and a style of beef that I don’t come across often, almost jerky-like in flavor intensity, yet still tender. I’m already eyeing the other variations on the menu for my next visit. Upper Boon Keng, you fed me well... I’ll be back soon for round two.
