Reinventing Yong Tau Foo for a Healthier Me

I've been indulging in rich, high-cholesterol foods lately, and the guilt is starting to set in. It was fine when I was a teenager, as my active lifestyle easily burned off those extra calories. However, as I age, I need to be more conscious of my diet. One of my go-to healthy dishes is Yong Tau Foo, a protein-rich and high-fiber meal featuring tofu and a variety of soups or sauces. Today, I opted for the regular version.

Normally, I would order the soup version, but the weather is too warm, so I requested to have the soup separated from the ingredients. This way, I don't have to wait for it to cool down before eating. If I don't do it this way, the piping hot soup will burn my tongue and be less enjoyable. The cook was initially annoyed with my deviation from their standard process, but I managed to convince them to accommodate my request. While it’s not a difficult adjustment, I understand that making dozens of these meals daily is stressful, and any changes can add to that burden. I was grateful to the cook for making it happen, and the result was delightful. I turned the most basic Yong Tau Foo into something special.

Among the many selections, I picked ingredients I was familiar with and some I didn't even know the names of, mostly made of tofu or fish paste. Regardless of their names, I knew they were tasty with a great texture.

To make it even healthier, I added items like bitter gourd, carrot, and water spinach, which are all fresh. I love the water spinach because it's a good source of fiber, and its crunchy texture enhances the dish's goodness.

Balancing indulgence with healthy eating is crucial as I become more mindful of my diet. My experience with customizing Yong Tau Foo to suit my preferences and the weather has shown that small adjustments can make a big difference in enjoying meals. By adding nutritious ingredients like bitter gourd, carrot, and water spinach, I transformed a simple dish into a delightful and healthful feast, proving that healthy eating can be both satisfying and flavorful.

Yong tau foo is always nice but the temptation is there on what we pick.

You’re right. As the price goes up based on the qty you pick 😂 i limit to 7 items only, enough to make me feel satisfied.
