The finished product using just a sandwich maker toaster
I can only say: I am really blessed today!
Usually when you see such a scrumptious meal (but somehow for new yorker millennials this is normal), in Kuala Lumpur, this will cost a bomb.
I too, will not have this often, unless there is a special occasion
Unlike today
When I was handed a ripe avocado by the least expected person, my office cleaner staff.
(Sometimes, those who have the least, have the most generous heart)
She was blessed with a few avocados from Indonesia when I was advising her to replace deep fried food (which is usually a staple) with something healthier like avocados.
Just so happened she had another friend (in her network of Indonesian working abroad) had a huge harvest from a locally grown and harvested Indonesian-brought-over-avocado tree!
She knew she couldn't keep it too long because of the hot weather in Kuala Lumpur, and her husband doesn't fancy it just yet because he isn't use to bland food.
(Yes, Malaysians are very spoilt kids showered with multi-layer-flavorful dishes while growing up. haha)

I was actually intending to make French Toast kind of sandwich from the near expiry half-priced bread I acquired, for the recent hospital run with my mom's secular aneurysm follow-up. With the half priced loaf I could just keep in the freezer and extend its shelf-life so that I can have better options taking a healthier, cleaner meal.
Whole meal with nuts and seeds loaves are very expensive in Malaysia, if it is counted an-apple-to-an-apple. So to have a half-priced loaf sitting around waiting for a buyer, I'd be one of the first to source it.

This is the less ripe one. The one I received was already all black and soft from the outside
And today it has been the cherry on top! It will become an additional treat to my meal that I hope 🤞🏼, would last me at least for 6-7 hours.
How is that?
I saw some talk on YouTube that saying the body craves more food is usually it doesn't have enough protein; but with the right about of protein, fibre and carbs, the body actually doesn't really need to eat.

So, compared to FoodPanda food ordering app (like Uber Eats in US), a restaurant toast cost around MYR22 (excluding delivery charges) for an avocado egg toast.
Ok, I don't have cheese in the mix but even the cheapest is around MYR17.
How much would this thrifty meal cost me?
Let's say if I already have rightly available sauces at my pantry, and I still priced the avocado:
- A loaf of this 50% bread costs MYR 3 (for 8 slices), 2 slices would be around MYR 0.75 (75 sen)
- An egg (smallest sized) is around MYR 0.45 (45 sen)
- A slice of ham is around MYR 1
- A promotional priced Avocado is around MYR 3.80
- Some shredded cabbage maybe cost MYR 0.10 (10 sen)
It would have rounded around MYR 6.10, only 30% of the price compared to the cheapest toast shown, and only 28% of the price if it is the avocado with cheese.
(I can guarantee, even with avocado available, it will probably be just half an avocado)
That's a BIG savings preparing
If all the ingredients available.
In fact, if I spent extra for the sauces, it would have cost the same price of the avocado toast, and I can still use the sauces a lot more times, probably lasting at least 6 months if I use it alternate days.
HOWEVER
If I want to digress, a plate of Nasi Lemak with a piece of deep fried chicken cost almost the same; a plate of Economy Rice with 1 meat and 2 vegetable condiments on a bowl of rice also costs the same, if not more.
What's my recipe for this homemade sandwich?
Wet Ingredients
- 1 egg (turning into a dip batter with honey for the bread slices)
- roughly ground black pepper, 1 tsp of mustard, 1 tbsp honey / honey vinegar, a tiny pinch of salt (for the sauce for the cabbage)
Dry Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread (mine is wholemeal + sesame seed + pumpkin seed)
- 1 avocado
- 1 slice of ham (optional)
- shredded cabbage
How to do it:
- Beat the egg with some honey / vinegar honey / soy / milk. Create an amount and consistency that can coat both slices of bread
- dip the bread slices and coat it thoroughly
- Toast the bread slices
- Slice the avocado as thinly as possible (for a better spread)
- mix a small handful of shredded cabbage with the honey mustard sauce thoroughly
- Place the ham, cabbage slaw on the French toasts
- Place the thinly sliced avocado and spread out nicely
- sprinkle additional roughly grounded pepper and salt to elevate the avocado's rich creamy taste
That's it. I tried to slowly enjoy the toasts but I still devour it in an hour. haha. With a cup of unsweetened latte.
However
It is actually true, once I allowed my brain to register my food (20 minutes after I stopped eating), my body actually stopped craving for desserts.
Of course, before I started preparing this (first) meal (of the day), I had a glass of room temperature water with 1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar. This helps kickstart the body, and according to the sugar resistant queen, it will block off the sugar craving where the brain had temporary spikes of dopamine that can crashed almost immediately in an hour if I had anything sweet first thing in the morning.
This experiment has done well enough to tell my body that I do not need sweet stuffs after that meal, and so far so good, 2 hours has passed and I have not have the slightest craving or hunger, and moreover, I can sit down and write this without craving for anything.

Another angle of the toast
Good fat, lean protein, and high fibre do bring good value to the brain
Despite I have been lacking of sleep due to work and ministry preparation (that's another post to take on), I am not feeling sleepy at all, compared to if I just had 2 slices of bread with jam and coffee.
I think my brain is happy today. Thanks to the additional blessing. 😄
My apologies to all the vegans out there. But I guess there should be a vegan way to substitute the protein with something equivalently good
Until Then
Stay healthy, stay curious and learn new things, and stay happy!

Lovely 😍 thanks a bunch for sharing your recipe. I'd agree that prepping one's own meal can be cheaper. I hardly buy take out or delivery these days, but I did subscribe to a weekday meal plan that's within my budget. I figured I'd do away with daily cooking since I'd be doing it only for myself. I do cook on the weekend since I have more time then. 😆 Happy midweek!

Oh I wish there is an affordable meal plan over here.
Usually I will pack the dishes at the economy rice shop with at least 15 types of dishes to choose from, especially during 8:30pm and chill it just for the next day because it is half priced.
However when yummy avocado comes by, a toast as to be done haha.
Happy midweek to you too!
Mmmm, I love avocados. They are a bit expensive importing them into Canada so I usually eat around two fruits a week. Even on lightly buttered toast.

Ah, so is Malaysia, because not all places in Malaysia could plant Avocado and successfully flower and fruit.
We usually have it from South Africa and occasionally from Indonesia.
But this time, interesting and miraculously there is one tree in the Highlands area actually fruiting a lot this year!
Usually I only buy if the avocado is less than 80 cents a fruit
Wow super love this...this homemade sandwich is very healthy..love to try this at home for the kids
Oh do tag me if you tried it!
I just so happened to have dijon mustard and honey, and that's why I used it for the cabbage.
If for the kids, maybe try thousand island style or ranch style, or opting for sesame mayo dressing (I love kewpie) for sweetness.
During certain season it's not too expensive around here and I love them! I'd make toast just as you are and honestly, I never tried it with ham. One of these days when I have my own fridge, I'd get all the ham I could & try your avocado toast 🤣
Haha! I pray you will get to find the best price of a fridge soon!
Then maybe we can try find a way to get your ham over with vacuum sealed packaging so that you don't get into trouble going through customs whenever you visit in the future 😉
que rico se ve!
