TacoCat's TrEats #137: Crispy Yummy Award-Winning Tempura! 😋

Hey Hive!

Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again but obviously you have to be vaccinated. But since there aren't any restrictions this allows us to try out different food places again!

So the other day, I was craving a tempura rice bowl since it's been ages ever since the last time we had a rice bowl like that. I don't think we've actually had it in Singapore before but I might've just forgotten. Anyway, we found out our neighbourhood mall has a restaurant that serves it so we decided to go try it out!

image.png

The restaurant is called Tokyo Shokudo and while I wouldn't say they specialise in any particular dish, they do have an assortment of typical Japanese cuisine including ramen, tendon and gyudon.

image.png

They do have quite a few different types of ramen though, such as their special Original ramen, Spicy ramen and even Yuzu ramen, which I thought was quite interesting!

image.png

More importantly, this restaurant is Halal-certified unlike many ramen restaurants since tonkotsu uses pork. So it's good that Muslims or people with special dietary requirements can enjoy ramen here too!

They didn't really have a lot of options for tendon but turns out the tendon is made by Chef Akimitsu who is also a 6 time Gold medalist at the Japan Donburi Awards! I've never heard of that before but it seems pretty legitimate.

image.png

I also read that this chef also started his own tendon restaurant called Akimitsu Tendon in Toronto! There are also a few branches in Singapore as well, which makes me wonder why some of his dishes are in this restaurant too if they were the same since he would be competing with himself? Unless he wanted to cater to the Halal customers as well here or something. Hmm.

Anyway, the outlet we went to was kinda small but there was still quite a lot of seats available although some of the tables were a little close to each other. It was still quite open and comfortable though. And thankfully it wasn't too crowded when we went there for dinner on a weekend.

image.png

Sean and I each got a tendon to try but we ordered different ones. And just a short 10 minutes or so later, our food arrived! Each tendon also comes with a small bowl of miso soup.

image.png

Since I was craving tempura, I ordered the biggest tendon they had, which was the Signature Tendon with prawn, fish, egg, nori and assorted vegetables on a bed of rice. It looked and smelled sooo good, I couldn't wait to dig in!

image.png

First thing to do was to break open the onsen egg! I think this might be one of my favourite ways to cook egg. Soft boiled on the inside and fried on the outside. It seems pretty tricky to do yourself and I've personally never tried cooking an egg like that before but maybe I should try it sometime.

image.png

The yolk was nice and runny, and while the outside of the onsen egg wasn't as fried as I would've liked, there was still a nice crisp on the edges. The rest of the tempura was delicious too, although I would've liked a little more pepper on the batter. The prawns and shiitake mushrooms were still nice and juicy though! The nori was fried until super crispy and the fish and pumpkin was nice too.

We didn't want to order the same thing, so Sean tried the Ebi Tempura & Tar Tar Fried Chicken Don! We were kinda skeptical of tar tar sauce on a tendon the chicken smelled delicious!

image.png

And thankfully the tar tar sauce was actually not too strong. It wasn't too sour either, rather it just added a tinge of sourness to the tempura which I though actually matched the ebi quite well! The karaage was tender and juicy too!

Overall it was a really good meal and really hit the spot! My craving for tempura was wholly satisfied. Although I'd say the Signature Tendon set was definitely a lot more worth it than the chicken one, since the difference in prices was only a dollar and you get so much more tempura in the Signature Tendon! Of course we shared the tempura since it was a little unbalanced but I'd say for $13.90 it's pretty worth it!

I'm not sure if this is the best tendon restaurant in Singapore, but it's pretty good and if you have friends who can only eat Halal, this is a pretty good place to go, and it's affordable too! We'll probably try other places the next time I'm craving some tendon but this is a good go-to as well.

Thanks so much for reading!

Mouth watering 🥲 I was looking for ramen in the menu. Hehe

We didn't try the ramen but I did see quite a few other people ordering it!
