The burgers like no ohters
In Chiang Mai, I've always had a hankering for Western or international cuisine like Japanese and Korean. Honestly, we haven't been saving much money on food because we often crave the slightly more upscale options rather than sticking to Thai dishes. Nevertheless, I adore discovering new eateries and so I did for burger joints when I crave burgers. The usual haunts like Beast Burger and Rock Me Burger are great, but I yearned for something different.
The humble burger, Homeless burger
I scoured the maps, seeking an under-the-radar spot that serves quality burgers without breaking the bank. That's how I stumbled upon Homeless Burger. The name itself grabbed my attention, and its location, tucked away in the mountains behind Chiang Mai University, added an air of mystery.
It took a few weeks and three attempts to finally try their food. The first two attempts were thwarted - once due to an unfortunate oil accident involving the owner, and the second time because they'd sold out before closing. Finally, on the third try, I got to sink my teeth into their burger. I visited with a couple of friends, and it was such a hit that I returned with my business partner and boyfriend.
Hidden-in-the-middle-of-nowhere charm
The location itself offers a unique journey, making it a captivating destination for friends or visitors to Chiang Mai. Hidden in plain sight behind the university, you'd never know such a place existed if it weren't for the maps. Its slightly offbeat atmosphere adds to its charm.
Upon arrival, we found the setup intriguing. There were two separate small buildings – one for cooking, ordering, and pick-up, and the other for dining in. It's as if they were aiming for an old-school American dining experience, but the end result was an entirely unique dining atmosphere. Honestly speaking, it's quite cool of a set up with a hint of sketchiness and ghetto-y feeling too :D I like it. Don't get me wrong.
Also, just a small tip - consider packing some mosquito repellent due to the no-aircon room setting.
The fried chiken burger beast!
As for the food, my initial choice was the classic burger patty. On my second visit, my boyfriend opted for the fried chicken burger, a dish he usually enjoys. The burger patty was a bit different from what we were used to, as it seemed they had mixed in some additional ingredients before grilling it.
The fried chicken burger, however, was a revelation. With the option to double or triple the patties at a very reasonable price, you end up with a colossal chicken burger unlike anything else in Chiang Mai, or even Thailand, at that price point.
Finger lickin' good fries and onion rings
Their fries and onion rings were also a highlight - super crispy, flavorful, and generously portioned. If I were in the mood for fries or onion rings, this would be my go-to spot.
In conclusion, on future visits, I'd likely opt for the chicken burger and a side of fries. The prices are reasonable for the quality and experience. We ended up paying about 2xxTHB per person. I wholeheartedly recommend supporting this local Thai business. The fact that it is unique plus everything is all house-made and you can see it being prepared in the kitchen is just the cherry on top.
