A South African twist: Boerie pig in a blanket

in Foodies Bee Hive3 years ago

Boerewors is a type of South African sausage, the name is derived from the Afrikaans word boer, which means farmer, and wors, which means sausage. There is no better way to cook it, than on a sizzling fire outdoors!

These kids were so lucky to have @braaiboy, South Africa’s absolute braai, aka barbeque, connoisseur as their mentor for the day! Teaching them how to build fires, barbeque their own meat and to make delicious meals outdoors!

One of the skills @braaiboy learnt our young campers was how to cook a traditional boerewors and stokbrood, which is wrapping dough around a stick and cooking it on the fire. The hole the stick makes in the middle is normally filled with decadent butter and honey.

Unfortunately, we had a lack of sticks lying around on the campsite, therefore @braaiboy improvised and created a version of a boerie pig in a blanket!

Once the coals were ready for the boerewors, he taught each of the kids how to “braai” it to their liking. As long as the wors was still very soft and could easy be squeezed using the braai tongs, the wors was still under. The grownups were lucky enough to have @braaiboy braai ours for us!

As we were outdoors, with no kitchen available, we had to improvise with the dough as well, as we had no utensils to roll it out. Luckily there was no lack of wine, therefore a wine bottle did the trick!

We cut the dough into strips and wrapped it around the cooked boerewors, then the kids put it back on the fire, until golden brown and crunchy!

And there you go! Our own camping alternative to the traditional South African boerie roll! Juicy, flavorsome and a big hit all around!

The left-over dough was cooked on the fire afterwards, to make “roosterkoek” and served with butter and honey. Nothing compares to feasting on freshly baked bread, smothered in melting butter and honey, dripping off your chin!

###### One thing about us South Africans, we were born to braai!

Sort:

I like your post, in my country Venezuela I had not seen this interesting way of preparing a "parrillera" and the children give a special touch to the environment.

Oooh lekker!! Nothing like a good South African braai, those kids must have had such fun. Just love it. Thank you for sharing @wynella , have a awesome day.

Thank you! It was so much fun teaching them, they had a blast!

What a beatituful post!

Passing on our birth right is always a magical time! You don’t want to be the adult at the party who can’t be trusted to Braai lol that’s a shame no one wants to walk around with

😂 so true! Although we’ve failed and gave in to a gas braai. My husband doesn’t have the patience for a fire.

Lol I think that’s because there’s no good rugby on these days, when there’s rugby you can start your fire and make your coals and by the second half you’re ready to rock

Looooove this!!!!! But OMG the diet goes out the window. I made your stroganoff and it was so so tasty!!!! Still got leftovers today so we’ve having it for dinner again tonight. Definitely keeping that recipe for the future. Love all your hood old South African recipes and braai ideas. Well done!

Thank you!! With the colder weather coming on, I'm really more into stews and soups these days, but my partner still braai's every single day, so it's fun to come up with new ideas and methods every now and then 😅
