Lucha por la libertad
Después de siglos de vivir como esclavos un grupo de afroamericanos esclavizados que lograban escapar de las haciendas se refugiaban en las montañas y zonas de difícil acceso en con vivían como hombres libre pero siempre alerta y preparados para luchar de ser descubierto por los soldados español. A estos hombres se les llamo Cimarrones.
En América, se llamó negro cimarrón (o, simplemente, cimarrón) a todo aquel esclavo rebelde o fugitivo que llevaba una vida de libertad en rincones apartados (de las ciudades o en el campo), denominados palenques o quilombos. Posteriormente, en Cuba se adoptó preferiblemente el vocablo jíbaro para referirse a los cimarrones. Parece también que la palabra cimarrón casi nunca se empleó con los nativos americanos fugitivos de las encomiendas.

Fight for freedom
After centuries of living as slaves, a group of enslaved African Americans who managed to escape from the haciendas took refuge in the mountains and areas of difficult access where they lived as free men but always alert and prepared to fight if discovered by the Spanish soldiers. These men were called Cimarrones.
In America, black cimarrón (or, simply, cimarrón) was called all that rebel or fugitive slave who led a life of freedom in remote corners (of the cities or in the countryside), called palenques or quilombos. Later, in Cuba, the word jíbaro was preferably adopted to refer to the maroons. It also appears that the word maroon was almost never used of Native American fugitives from the encomiendas.
