Gridcoin -- Scientific research instead of hot air

in Deutsch D-A-CH2 years ago

Hi all

it has been quite a while since I posted about Gridcoin, but still, this is one of my favorite projects out there. Although I must say that it for sure is not the most profitable one speaking financially. It helps to generate scientific research and therefore helps to add new information and knowledge to the things we as humans already know, this is for me a much greater benefit than a bit more crypto coin value.

Just a short recap here :)

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin is rewarding scientific calculations done by your CPU, GPU, or both, you could say that in a way it is acting a bit like the widely known proof of work algorithms out there, Bitcoin for instance or Ethereum.
But in contrast to those, the things that you are calculating are not just some numbers, but really are part of scientific research that a University or Institute is doing right at that moment. You can even choose which projects you want to be active in, here you can find the whitelist of all currently supported projects.
So the things you are computing do have relevance, scientific papers are based upon them, follow Gridcoin on Twitter for updates on publications.
Gridcoin is based upon BOINC, the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing

What projects are currently listed?

Here is a shortlist of all the projects on the Gridcoin Whitelist at the moment:

  • Want to help fight childhood cancer? or Covid19? Then World Community Grid is the project for you.
  • Want to help create 3D Models of Asteroids? Asteroids@home features those tasks
  • Want to help find cures for major human diseases? Protein structure prediction can be done with Rosetta@Home

These are just 3 examples of the big variety of projects you can contribute to and ultimately be rewarded for.

Talking about rewards

Well, to be honest, being part of cutting-edge scientific research is rewarding in itself. Apart from that, you are rewarded with Gridcoin (Ticker: GRC) depending on the magnitude of your contribution. It needs to be said that different kinds of hardware are also producing different results, so computing with a Raspberry Pi against a Ryzen 5950x is something that is rewarded very differently :)
Also, using GPUs, you can check in which project this is possible within the whitelist, is resulting in higher output and normally also in a bigger GRC reward.
Having said all of that, it is only fair to say that you will not get rich using your computers for science, well who would have thought that ... :)
But, and please let me repeat myself, it is rewarding in itself, much more than just producing hot air by trying to grab fractions of fractions of a Bitcoin.

Where can I get more Information?

Thanks for reading! Take care!

Jan

ps sorry für das Englisch

I think asteroids@home has been having issues as I haven't seen work in weeks (or completed work uploaded). But if someone is looking for another project in the astronomy or astrophysics category, einstein@home is great (help find pulsars) and milkyway@home is good as well (help generate a model of the galaxy).

Guter Artikel!

Hive Power Up Month - Feedback from Day 21
