Hustle is a Netflix sports drama movie about Basketball, produced by Adam Sandler and Lebron James.

The movie tells the story of the scouter Stanley Sugerman (Adam Sandler) who works for the Philadelphia 76ers franchise, and the young talent Bo Cruz (Juancho Hernangómez), a promising Spanish basketball player from a humble family and completely off the radar of the professional teams.

Despite his undisputed aptitude as a talent scout, Stanley always wanted to become a coach and so spend more time with his family, which was not possible because of his constant traveling.

His life was about to change when the owner of the Sixers expressed his desire to see him as the assistant coach. However, soon after this he passed away and his son Vince Merrick (Ben Foster) took over the franchise.

Stanley still worked for a few months as an assistant coach until Vince demanded that he return to scouting for the team. He didn't accept it easily, but Vince proposed that once Stanley brought a new star to the Sixers, he could return to his position with the coach.

His search for a new talent led him to Spain. There, he found out that the player he had been scouting was injured and had therefore wasted his time. But his hopes returned when, drawn by a nearby crowd watching a street basketball game, he found Bo Cruz.

Bo Cruz's basketball talent was evident, but he was just using to hustle and so help his family with the money. Stanley convinced them that Bo would be drafted by the Sixers in the NBA and took him to America.

However, things were not that easy. The Sixers were not convinced that Bo was really the exceptional player Stanley saw and were not interested in him at first. Still, Stanley was convinced and that was enough for him, even at the cost of his job, to invest and help Bo become a professional player.

From there, the plot develops around the NBA draft, with Stanley (also in pursuit of his goals) preparing Bo and closely following his physical, technical, and psychological evolution, the latter tested mainly by his rivalry with Kermit Wilts (Anthony Edwards).

My Thoughts

It is a very interesting movie, with light drama, focused on the perseverance of the protagonists. It is not that deep, the plot is even predictable, but if you like sports as I do, you will probably get enough entertainment.

The movie succeeds in its apparent goal of promoting basketball, showing all of Bo Cruz's Rocky Balboa-like inspirational evolution, while also pleasing sports fans with plenty of on court action.

I liked Adam Sandler's performance here, although it's not the kind of silly movie he is most used to, did very well as expected. The highlight though goes to Juancho Hernangómez, who played Bo Cruz, for his great performance considering he is not a professional actor, and also to all the other more than 20 NBA stars who participated in the movie.

Juancho really knew how to play the character. Sometimes I had the impression that some emotions were missing in him, but actually I think this is what made his character even better: the air of coldness, indifference or simply ignorance of a young Spaniard who arrived in America without knowing anything, just following the directions of his "manager".

I enjoyed Hustle and will probably watch other sports movies soon. I've heard that Coach Carter is a great one about basketball, so I have high expectations. Well, let me know if you have any other recommendations. Thanks for stopping by and see you later!

Sort:

It was one of Adam Sandler's successful and favourite films. It has a structure that also deciphers the life of talent hunters. It also tells about their travels and sacrifices they make in order to watch the actors and discover them before anyone else.

You're right! We usually see talent hunters only as an "opportunity" for the many young people who want to go professional in some sport. But it is really interesting to see how much they sacrifice in their job. Thanks for your comment! !PIZZA
