The Grand Seduction is a remake of the 2003 film directed by Jean-François Pouliot in which the inhabitants of a small fishing village in northern Canada must, by force of circumstance and in order for the small village to survive, find a doctor if they want a company to build a factory in the area.
The task is given to Murray French (played correctly by Brendan Gleeson, he of Braveheart, The General and Gangs of New York among other films in which he has starred), who chooses Dr. Paul Lewis (played by Taylor Kitsch, whose most important precedent is his performance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine).
From that moment on, the work of seduction and convincing begins, with all the neighbours trying to convince Paul at all costs to stay with them permanently so that the factory project, so longed-for and necessary, can go ahead.
La Gran Seducción es un remake de aquel film dirigido por Jean-François Pouliot en el año 2003 en el cual los habitantes de un pequeño pueblo pesquero en el norte de Canadá tienen, por imperio de las circunstancias y para lograr la sobrevivencia de la pequeña aldea, que encontrar a un médico si quieren que una empresa construya una fábrica en la zona.
La tarea se le encomienda a Murray French (interpretado correctamente por Brendan Gleeson, aquél de Braveheart, The General y Gangs of New York entre otras películas que lo han visto protagonista), que elige al doctor Paul Lewis (rol a cargo de Taylor Kitsch que registra como antecedente más importante su actuación en X-Men Origins: Wolverine).
A partir de ese momento, comienza un trabajo de seducción y convencimiento por parte de todos los vecinos quienes tratarán de convencera toda costa a Paul para que se quede con ellos de forma permanente y de esta manera el proyecto de la fábrica, tan ahelado y necesario, siga adelante.
The main character Murray French is a fisherman from the small community of Tickle Head (this small town actually exists and is a cape on the Newfoundland and Labrador peninsula south of Sandy Brook and south of Little Devils Island) which now has just over a hundred inhabitants and survives only thanks to state subsidies as it has no productive economic activity and even a very low demographic rate that would give rise to illusions about an increase in the population in the future.
In this context, the installation of a factory for the processing of all the fish production that fishermen bring to the coast on a daily basis appears as an interesting alternative to employ local and foreign labour. The indispensable condition is that the factory must have a doctor, and that this professional be brought in by the local municipal authorities.
While the mayor goes to the city of Saint John to continue with the negotiations at governmental level, the management of the local municipality remains in the hands of Murray, who must continue the negotiations from the town with the new industry, which is not a fishing industry but a petrochemical one, trying by all means to get the local inhabitants to collaborate with it.
At the same time, the company's directors want to settle there at all costs and include, in the negotiations, substantial bribes for all those who are willing to collaborate. Even the selected doctor has actually been found in possession of cocaine, but on condition that he moves to the small village to take up his new job, the authorities and the police drop all kinds of accusations against him.
The ordeal is to last thirty days and in that time the doctor must fulfil his role as permanent doctor to the community. Murray, knowing of Paul's (the doctor) passion for cricket, organises a cricket match in his honour between the same inhabitants who have no idea how to play the game. Nightly training sessions, game tactics carried out by Murray himself (who is the only one who knows how to play the game) catch the doctor's attention when he is flying over the village by helicopter on his arrival and excite him.
The first few days pass pleasantly, mainly because they help Paul forget the break-up of his engagement and he ends up falling in love with a local woman, who asks him to stay. However, when he discovers all the tricks Murray and the people of Tickle Head have played to persuade him to stay, he decides to retrace his steps.
As he leaves, Murray confesses the whole truth and his desire to stay for the good of the community, as it is the only way to get the petrochemical plant up and running and the population of Tickle Head, which seemed doomed to disappear, slowly begins to grow again.
The final image shows the industrial plant in production, almost all the inhabitants with their work badges and the lights going out at the end of the day, while some moans of pleasure can be heard as if indicating that this is the sign of a new era and the population of Tickle Head will have new inhabitants in a few months, thus beginning a demographic growth that will save the small community.
El personaje principal Murray French es un pescador de la pequeña comunidad de Tickle Head (esta pequeña localidad en realidad existe y es un cabo en la península de Terranova y Labrador al sur de Sandy Brook y al sur de Little Devils Island) que ahora cuenta con poco más de cien habitantes y sobrevive sólo gracias a las subvenciones estatales ya que no posee ninguna actividad económica productiva e incluso una tasa demográfica muy baja que permita alentar ilusiones obre un aumento de la población en el futuro.
En ese contexto aparece como alternativa de interés para ocupar mano de obra local y foránea, la instalación de una fábrica para la elaboración de toda la producción ictícola que diariamente traen los pescadores a la costa. La condición indispensable es que la fábrica tenga un médico, y ese profesional sea traído por las autoridad del municipio local.
Mientras el alcalde se traslada hasta la ciudad de Saint John para seguir con las tratativas a nivel gubernamental, la dirección del municipio local queda en manos de Murray quien debe continuar las negociaciones desde el pueblo con la nueva industria que no es pesquera sino petroquímica tratando por todos los medios que los habitantes del lugar colaboren con la misma.
A su vez los directivos de la empresa quieren radicarse a toda costa e incluyen, en las tratativas, cuantiosos sobornos para todos los que estén dispuestos a colaborar. Incluso el médico seleccionado, en realidad ha sido encontrado en posesión de cocaína, pero a condición de que se traslade a la pequeña aldea a hacerse cargo de su nuevo trabajo, las autoridades y la policía dejan caer todo tipo de acusación sobre él.
La prueba debe durar treinta días y en ese lapso de tiempo el médico debe cumplir con su función como médico permanente de la comunidad. Murray sabiendo de la pasión de Paul (el doctor) por el criket organiza en su honor un partido de este deporte entre los mismos habitantes que no tienen ni la más mínima idea de cómo se juega. Entrenamientos nocturnos, tácticas de juego llevadas a cabo por el mismo Murray (que es el único que sabe como jugarlo) llaman la atención del médico cuando está sobrevolando el pueblo en helicóptero a su llegada y lo entusiasman.
Los primeros días pasan placenteramente sobre todo porque le sirven a Paul a olvidar la ruptura de su noviazgo y termina enamorándose de una mujer local, quien le pide quedarse. Sin embargo cuando descubre todas las artimañas de Murray y los habitantes de Tickle Head para convencerlo a quedarse decide volver sobre sus propios pasos.
En el momento en que se va Murray le confiesa toda la verdad y su deseo que se quede para el bien de la comunidad, ya que es único modo de que la planta petroquímica se ponga en marcha y la población de Tickle Head, que parecía condenada a la desaparición vuelve, de a poco, a crecer.
La imagen final muestra a la planta industrial en producción, casi todos los habitante con sus divisas de trabajo y las luces que se apagan al final del día, mientras se escuchan algunos gemidos de placer como indicando que es la señal de una nueva era y la población de Tickle Head tendrá dentro de algunos meses nuevos habitantes, dando así inicio a un crecimiento demográfico que salvará la pequeña comunidad.
Although the criticism it received at the time, especially from some qualified journalistic organs such as the New York Times, was not too positive, the film fulfils its objective of entertaining with a story that, without being too mellifluous and/or romantic, is, to a certain extent, believable and likeable, because of its characters who give a sense of reality to their actions that we see repeated on a daily basis in our own lives.
This sense of realism, in turn, is fully identified with the "location" of the film, as it has been filmed in the place it claims to be, i.e. on the Labrador Paninsula without artificially prepared sets and the like.
It's all genuine, even down to the acting of all the characters. And that is something that, when judging the film, deserves to be emphasised.
The film was shot around St John's and Trinity Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Si bien la crítica que recibió en su momento, especialmente de algunos órganos periodísticos calificados como el New York Times no fue demasiado positiva, la película cumple con su objetivo de entretener con una historia que sin ser demasiado meliflua y/o romántica es, a un cierto punto, creíble y querible, por sus personajes que le dan un viso de realidad a sus acciones que vemos repetidas a cotidiano en nuestra propia vida.
Este sentido de realismo, a su vez, se encuentra totalmente identificado con la "location" de la película, ya que se ha sido filmada en el lugar que dice ser, es decir en la Panínsula del Labrador sin escenografías preparadas artificialmente y cosas de ese tipo.
Es todo genuino, incluso hasta la interpretación de todos sus personajes. Y es algo que, al juzgar la película, merece ser destacado.
El rodaje de la película tuvo lugar en los alrededores de St John's y Trinity Bay, en Terranova y Labrador.
