Acclaimed by general and specialized critics as the best TV series of all time, Breaking Bad marked a before and after in the genre.
When Vince Gilligan wrote and produced Breaking Bad, he was giving birth to an unprecedented phenomenon in the television spectrum. The drug theme was, of course, not new.
Countless movies and TV series (remember the various narco series produced by Netflix over the years) had devoted hours of filming to this phenomenon of modern society.
However, Gilligan's approach is absolutely different because it is based on characters that are not only credible, that come out of the normal citizen that we meet on the street every day as personified by a great Walter White (Bryan Cranston 'Malcolm'), humble and even almost harmless chemistry teacher, a true genius in his field, by RJ Mitte in the role of his son Walter White Jr. with a performance that leads the viewer to suspect that the actor really suffers from that disease.
And it is true, since the third year of age he suffered from cerebral palsy that he managed to contain over the years with a lot of physical exercise.
But they are not the two credible characters. Everything else works in perfect harmony: the faithful wife to a point (Anna Gunn as Skyler White), the cop brother-in-law with a rather particular sense of honesty (Dean Norris as Hank Schrader), the white-gloved mobster who owns a fast food chain specializing in chicken with a mix of Mexican and Asian ancestry (Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring), the lawyer (Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman) who defends his interests and whose popularity is going to continue the saga of the series with other characteristics and finally a Jesse tremendously human in all his weaknesses produced as a drug addict (Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman).
And in all this scenario a chemist who perfects the recipe for a drug that will make them very rich.
There are several truly strong points of the series. I will list the ones that I believe, in my humble opinion, are the main ones:
a) The absence of excessive deaths, only those that must be incorporated by force in a plot of the genre.
b) A script, unlike so many other series with a perfectly respected beginning and end. Five years (2008-2013), five seasons. Not even a spin-off.
The only concession by Gilligan and the actors was the filming of Breaking Bad: The Road where the main protagonist is Jesse and the series Better Call Saul that do not represent a continuation of the series, but two storylines completely detached from it.
c) The ambiguity of the character, from a shy professor in the province (Albuquerque) to a ruthless drug boss. A transformation that gradually takes place throughout the five seasons.
d) Excellent direction with spectacular close-ups of the New Mexico desert.
Even the ending, so ambiguous in other series, making the viewer believe that there is the possibility of a continuation, does not exist in Breaking Bad: the protagonist dies and everything is concluded. Just like in the old days.
52 awards received in five years as Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Best Editing, Best Episodic Drama, Best Non-Lead Actor, Best Drama and many other awards are a palmares hard to beat.
Fifteen Emmy Awards won between 2008 and 2015, eight Saturn Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, just to mention the most illustrious awards, have been the just recognition to the, considered by many, the best TV series of all time.

Cuando Vince Gilligan escribe y produce Breaking Bad estaba dando origen a un fenómeno inédito en el espectro televisivo.
El tema de la droga no era, por supuesto, nuevo. Infinidad de películas y series de TV (recordemos las varias series de narcos producidas por Netflix a lo largo de estos años) habian dedicado horas de rodaje a este fenómeno de la sociedad moderna.
Sin embargo el enfoque de Gilligan es absolutamente diverso porque se basa en personajes no solo creíbles, que salen del normal ciudadano que encontramos por la calle todos los días como el personificado por un estupendo Walter White (Bryan Cranston 'Malcolm'), humilde y hasta casi inofensivo profesor de quimica, un verdadero genio en su campo, por RJ Mitte en el rol de su hijo Walter White Jr. con una actuación que lleva a sospechar al espectador que el actor verdaderamente sufra de esa enfermedad.
Y es verdad, desde el tercer año de edad sufrió de una parálisis cerebral que logró contener con el pasar de los años con mucho ejercicio físico.
Pero no son ellos dos los personajes creíbles. Todo el resto funciona en perfecta armonía: la mujer fiel hasta un cierto punto (Anna Gunn como Skyler White), el cuñado policía con un sentidad de la honestidad bastante particular (Dean Norris como Hank Schrader), el mafioso de guantes blancos dueño de una cadena de fast food especializada en pollos con una ascendencia mezcla entre mexicana y asiática (Giancarlo Esposito como Gus Fring), el abogado (Bob Odenkirk como Saul Goodman) que defiende sus intereses y cuya popularidad va a ser que continúe la saga de la serie con otras caracteristicas y por ultimo un Jesse tremendamente humano en todas sus debilidades producidas como toxicodependiente (Aaron Paul como Jesse Pinkman).
Y en todo este escenario un químico que perfecciona la receta de una droga que los hará muy ricos.
Son varios los puntos verdaderamente fuertes de la serie. Voy a enunciar los que creo, según mi humilde opinión, son laos principales:
a) La ausencia de muertes excesivas, solo aquellas que deben incorporarse por fuerza en un argumento del género.
b) Un guión, a diferencia, de tantas otras series con un inicio y un final perfectamente respetado. Cinco años (2008-2013), cinco estaciones. Ni siquiera un spin-off.
La única concesión de Gilligan y los actores fue la filmación de Breaking Bad: El Camino donde el protagonista principal es Jesse y la serie Better Call Saul que no representan una continuación de la serie, sino dos argumentos totalmente desprendidos de la misma.
c) La ambiguedad del personaje, de tímido profesor de provincia (Albuquerque) a despiadado boss de la droga. Una transformación que se va paulatinamente realizando a la lo largo de las cinco temporadas.
d) Una excelente dirección con espectaculares primeros planos del desierto de New México.
Incluso el final, tan ambiguo en otras series, haciendo creer al espectador que existe la posibilidad de una continuación, en Breaking Bad no existe: el protagonista muere y todo se concluye. Como en los viejos tiempos.
52 premios recibidos en cinco años como Mejor actor protagonista en una serie dramática, mejor montaje, mejor drama a episodios, mejor actor no protagonista, mejor drama y tantos otros reconocimientos son un palmares dificil de superar.
Quince Emmy Award ganados entre el 2008 y el 2015, ocho Saturn Award y dos Golden Globe por solo citar los premios más ilustres han sido el justo reconocimiento a la, considerada por muchos, mejor serie tv de todos los tiempos.
