Hello friends, today I would like to participate in the @cinetv contest in which we have to talk about films that contain trials, I found it very interesting and original and after some thought I decided to participate with a wonderful film called "Out of the Ashes" although in Spanish they decided to call it "El Peso del Pasado" (The Weight of the Past) is a biographical film that deals with the holocaust from the point of view of a woman who had to practice her profession in one of the most brutal concentration and extermination camps in Poland.
¡Hola amigos, el día de hoy me gustaría participar en el concurso de @cinetv en el que tenemos que hablar sobre películas que contengan juicios, me pareció muy interesante y original y después de pensarlo un poco decidí participar con una película maravillosa llamada «Out of the Ashes» aunque en español decidieron llamarla «El Peso del Pasado» es una película biográfica que trata el tema del holocausto desde el punto de vista de una mujer que tuvo que ejercer su profesión en uno de los campos de concentración y exterminios más brutales de Polonia.

Out of the Ashes is a 2003 film directed by Joseph Sargent. and starring Christine Lahti, which presents in context the drama experienced by Dr. Gisella Perl, a Hungarian gynaecologist who, after being captured by the Gestapo along with her family, was transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau, one of the most brutal extermination camps of the Third Reich. Fortunately, at the end of the war, the concentration and extermination camps are liberated and Dr. Perls arrives in the United States where she tries to practice her profession again, but unfortunately she is not received in a good way, but a trial is opened against her for having worked directly with Dr. Josef Mengele who was nicknamed "The Angel of Death" due to the crimes he committed by performing brutal experiments on his patients.
Out of the Ashes es una película del 2003, dirigida por Joseph Sargent y protagonizada por Christine Lahti, que nos presenta en contexto el drama vivido por la doctora Gisella Perl, medico ginecóloga húngara que después de ser capturada por la Gestapo junto a su familia, fue trasladada a Auschwitz-Birkenau, uno de los campos de exterminio más brutales de tercer Reich. Afortunadamente, al final de la guerra los campos de concentración y exterminio son liberados y la doctora Perls llega a Estados Unidos donde intenta nuevamente ejercer su profesión, pero lamentablemente no la reciben de buena manera, sino que se abre un juicio en su contra por haber trabajado directamente con el doctor Josef Mengele a quién apodaban «El Ángel de la Muerte» debido a los crímenes que cometió al realizar brutales experimentos sobre sus pacientes.
Dr. Perl is then forced to recall all the horror she experienced inside Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen and through Flashbacks we begin to experience with her the horrors of being a prisoner inside such a hell.
La doctora Perl entonces se ve forzada a rememorar todo el horror que vivió dentro de Auschwitz y Bergen Belsen y a través de Flashbacks comenzamos a experimentar junto con ella los horrores de ser un prisionero dentro de semejante infierno.
As a doctor, Gisella began working in hospitals inside Auschwitz, in the Hungarian women's section, but these were no ordinary hospitals, they were warehouses for dying people where there was a lack of proper medical supplies and medicines that could have saved thousands of lives. She was soon discovered by Dr. Josef Mengele who asked her to gather for him all the pregnant women he could find, as they would be moved to a better area where they would be better treated. She obviously believed him because she didn't know him, so she gathered the women to send to Mengele, but soon discovered that they were taken directly to the gas chambers and others simply to the laboratories where they were subjected to the sadistic doctor's absurd experiments.
Al ser médico, Gisella comenzó a trabajar en hospitales dentro de Auschwitz, en la sección de mujeres húngaras, pero no eran hospitales comunes y corrientes, eran almacenes de gente moribunda donde faltaban los utencilios médicos adecuados y los medicamentos que podrían haber salvado miles de vidas. Ella pronto fue descubierta por el doctor Josef Mengele quien le pidió que reuniera para él a todas las mujeres embarazadas que encontrara, ya que serían trasladadas a una mejor zona donde serían mejor tratadas, ella obviamente le creyó porque no lo conocía, así que reunió a las mujeres para enviárselas a Mengele, pero pronto descubrió que ellas fueron trasladadas directamente a las cámaras de gas y otras simplemente a los laboratorios donde fueron sometidas por los absurdos experimentos del sádico galeno.
From that moment on, she made the difficult decision to perform abortions on all pregnant women who came to her in order to save their lives and prevent them from being selected for the gas chambers or the horrible experiments of Mengele, who was also obsessed with multiple pregnancies.
A partir de ese momento ella tomó la difícil decisión de practicar abortos en todas las mujeres embarazadas que llegaban a ella, lo hacía para salvarles la vida evitando que fuesen seleccionadas para las cámaras de gas o los horribles experimentos de Mengele quien además estaba obsesionado con los embarazos múltiples.
One of the scenes that struck me the most was when she delivered a woman in the darkness of a barrack and shortly afterwards she suffocated the baby by covering his airway with her hand, she did it while crying because she really didn't want to do it, but otherwise the mother would be killed and anyway a sad end awaited him, as sometimes they threw live babies into the ovens of the crematorium. It was a very shocking and difficult scene to watch.
Una de las escenas que más me impactó fue cuando ella atendió el parto de una mujer en medio de la oscuridad de una barraca y poco tiempo después ella asfixió al bebé cubriéndole las vías respiratorias con la mano, lo hizo mientras lloraba porque realmente no quería hacerlo, pero de lo contrario la madre sería asesinada y de todos modos a él le esperaba un triste final, ya que a veces arrojaban a los bebés vivos en los hornos del crematorio. Fue una escena muy impactante y difícil de mirar.
It's frustrating to see how the judges question her all the time, trying to make her feel guilty for the things she did, but as she herself said, she just wanted to give these women a chance, so that later they could have children in freedom, not that it was an easy decision to make, but what made her most indignant was that one of the judges was Jewish, like her, but he had never been in a concentration camp and therefore didn't know what it was like to make life and death decisions, with the constant fear of being killed at any moment.
Es frustrante ver como los jueces la cuestionan todo el tiempo, tratando de hacerla sentir culpable por las cosas que hizo, pero como ella misma dijo, solo quería darle una oportunidad a esas mujeres, para que más adelante pudieran tener hijos en libertad, y no es que fuese una decisión fácil de tomar, pero lo que a ella más le indignaba era que uno de los jueces era judío, como ella, pero él jamás estuvo encerrado en un campo de concentración y por lo tanto no sabía lo que era tomar decisiones de vida o muerte, con el miedo constante de ser asesinado en cualquier momento.
Finally, thanks to the testimonies of other women who were saved by her and also to her words "I will not be able to be reunited with my family, my husband, my parents, my son, why did God let me live? I don't know, maybe it was to save those women and later bring free children into the world", Dr. Perl was granted citizenship and permission to practice medicine in the United States.
Finalmente gracias a los testimonios de otras mujeres que fueron salvadas por ella y también por sus palabras «No podré reunirme con mi familia, mi esposo, mis padres, mi hijo ¿por qué Dios me permitió vivir? No lo sé, tal vez fue para salvar a esas mujeres y más adelante traer al mundo a niños libres», la doctora Perl obtuvo la ciudadanía y el permiso para ejercer la medicina en los Estados Unidos.
Apart from the performances, one of the things I liked most about this film was the cinematography, with dark, monochromatic shots in the Auschwitz scenes and brighter, more colourful shots in the trial scenes.
Aparte de las actuaciones, una de las cosas que más me gustó de esta película fue su fotografía, con planos monocrómaticos y oscuros en las escenas de Auschwitz y más iluminados y llenos de color en las escenas del juicio.
I also liked the message of this film: we should not judge anyone, especially if we don't know their story.
También me gustó el mensaje que nos deja esta película, no debemos juzgar a nadie y mucho menos si no conocemos su historia.
