Science fiction horror film, written and directed by David Cronenberg – body horror legend. The film is sporting a stellar cast featuring both, the late great Ian Holm as well as Willem Dafoe in supporting roles, with Jude Law in his twenties as the lead character Ted Pikul. Yet, as interesting as this all may sound, the film is more a thriller than horror, and all the horror part looks as if it's been toned down since director's 1980's classics Scanners, The Fly and Videodrome.
EXistenZ is an amusing manifestation of an attempt to be relevant in the new age of Web 1.0 Internet and online computer games. The film's plot is an experiment of turning a classic 1990s PC game involving conspiracies and rebel movements into a movie.

WHAT I LIKED
The themes. One of those involves being an innovator yet somehow ending up in a role of oppressor. EXistenZ is also a sober 1990's experiment to see where the online gaming would end up in the future.
The plot twists are as good as if they'd been written for the best FPS RPG of the time.
From today's point of view, eXistenZ stands out as the most emblematic example of that decade in terms of where computer gaming was in practically every sense: themes, character design, development, future expectations, philosophy.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
The design of the so called pods – digital gaming devices. Wrong design for the wrong movie at the wrong time; too bio-organically odd for not that odd bio-organic virtual reality.
Not all venereal horror designed by king stands the test of time.
