Jessica Lange (two-time Oscar winner) plays a woman obsessed with her son and suffering from unhealthy jealousy.
She plays the mother-in-law no one would want to have because her relationship with her daughter-in-law is so difficult.
That daughter-in-law is personified by Gwyneth Paltrow, who does a great job playing the sincere young woman who lived with a profound lack of emotion and has now found happiness, or so she imagined.

Both are strong pillars of the show, both fight to the death for a young man who is oblivious to everything around him.
Like most thrillers of that decade (Sleeping with the Enemy, A Kiss Before Dying, etc.), it's easy to sense where the plot is headed.
While it has some surprising twists, it is admittedly a little predictable.
All in all, this is an entertaining and gripping film. A perfect film to watch in an afternoon and have a good time as the plot connects easily.

Excellent performance by Jessica Lange, one of the best actresses of all time and the heart and soul of the story.
Gwyneth Paltrow plays the usual role: a good girl who doesn't hurt a fly, complains about everything, is a victim of everything, that is, as usual, explained as usual. Johnathon Schaech plays the supporting role in this intense one-woman drama with twists and turns.
Technical highlights include cinematography by Andrew Dunn and a great score by Chris Young (emulating Jerry Goldsmith).

A story that is no great wonder as it has a somewhat trite storyline, but still makes you interested in knowing the ending, and when it's all over you think: "I've had a good time".
