Talking about the use of animals in movies is not one of the most talked about topics in the cinematic universe (or even outside of it). However, it is a topic that should be discussed more without causing so much discomfort (after all, these discussions are necessary to create the protocols that make this possible). Therefore, I write this text with the intention of talking a little about this, also considering some different perspectives on this same subject.
Animals (whether pets or not) have always been used in movies. Taking on (or not) leading positions (or being supporting characters), they arouse the interest of a large part of the public with an almost natural “magnetism”. On the other hand, behind the cameras, there are countless reports about mistreatment in relation to the care of animals that are used in movies (as well as in television series or even commercials).
Even though it is not a much-discussed topic, there are NGOs that work against it and influential people who go to great lengths to prevent animals from being used in these types of projects. In any case, this still becomes controversial, because there is no completely restrictive law (at least not as far as I know) regarding this use. Over the years, it is clear that the use of animals in cinema and television has changed, but it has not been fully eradicated.
I think that when it comes to animals with a specific purpose within the plot, it is possible to use them, but not with the aim of using them exhaustively in search of a “perfect scene” (something that has happened a lot in movies), or in a way that does not cause them mistreatment. Dogs, cats, horses or monkeys are the most common choices, and yet, many filmmakers have already realized who can replace them with digital effects to avoid further controversy.
Depending on the type of scene in which the animals are inserted, replacing them with digital effects may even sound like something very artificial (for example: interaction between children or adults with these animals in routine activities, such as a walk in the park in a movie comedy, romance or drama). On the other hand, in more complex movies, scenes involving a lot of action could be rethought with the insertion of animals created in artificial ways.
It all depends on what is being done, because the use of animals in cinema and television is unlikely to be extinct. Interactions between humans and animals are more than natural. Movies and television series are “hostages” (to a certain extent) of these interactions, but they need to learn to limit them within more considered concepts. The realism of a scene can be achieved without using real animals, but it is necessary to understand the context of the projects.
Hablar del uso de animales en las películas no es uno de los temas más comentados en el universo cinematográfico (ni siquiera fuera de él). Sin embargo, es un tema que debería discutirse más sin causar tanto malestar (al fin y al cabo, estas discusiones son necesarias para crear los protocolos que lo hagan posible). Por eso, escribo este texto con la intención de hablar un poco sobre esto, considerando también algunas perspectivas diferentes sobre este mismo tema.
Los animales (sean mascotas o no) siempre se han utilizado en las películas. Asumiendo (o no) puestos protagonistas (o siendo personajes secundarios), despiertan el interés de gran parte del público con un “magnetismo” casi natural. Por otro lado, detrás de las cámaras, existen innumerables denuncias sobre malos tratos en relación al cuidado de los animales que se utilizan en películas (así como en series de televisión o incluso anuncios publicitarios).
Aunque no es un tema muy discutido, hay ONG que trabajan en contra y personas influyentes que hacen todo lo posible para evitar que se utilicen animales en este tipo de proyectos. En cualquier caso, esto sigue siendo controvertido, porque no existe una ley completamente restrictiva (al menos que yo sepa) con respecto a este uso. Con el paso de los años, está claro que el uso de animales en el cine y la televisión ha cambiado, pero no ha sido totalmente erradicado.
Creo que cuando se trata de animales con un propósito específico dentro de la trama, es posible utilizarlos, pero no con el objetivo de utilizarlos de forma exhaustiva en busca de una “escena perfecta” (algo que ha sucedido mucho en las películas), o de una manera que no les cause maltrato. Perros, gatos, caballos o monos son las opciones más habituales y, sin embargo, muchos cineastas ya se han dado cuenta de quién puede sustituirlos por efectos digitales para evitar mayores polémicas.
Dependiendo del tipo de escena en la que se inserten los animales, sustituirlos por efectos digitales puede incluso sonar como algo muy artificial (por ejemplo: interacción de niños o adultos con estos animales en actividades rutinarias, como un paseo por el parque en un película de comedia, romance o drama). Por otro lado, en películas más complejas, las escenas con mucha acción podrían repensarse con la inserción de animales creados de forma artificial.
Todo depende de lo que se haga, porque es poco probable que se extinga el uso de animales en el cine y la televisión. Las interacciones entre humanos y animales son más que naturales. Las películas y las series de televisión son “rehenes” (hasta cierto punto) de estas interacciones, pero necesitan aprender a limitarlas dentro de conceptos más reflexivos. El realismo de una escena se puede conseguir sin utilizar animales reales, pero es necesario entender el contexto de los proyectos.

No entanto, é um tema que deveria ser mais comentado sem causar tanto desconforto (afinal, essas discussões são necessárias para criar os protocolos que tornam isso possível). Sendo assim, eu escrevo esse texto com a intenção de falar um pouco sobre isso considerando também algumas óticas diferentes dentro desse mesmo assunto.
Desde sempre, os animais (sejam eles de estimação ou não) foram usados em filmes. Assumindo (ou não) posições de protagonismo (ou sendo personagens coadjuvantes), eles despertam o interesse de uma grande parte do público com um “magnetismo” quase natural. Por outro lado, atrás das câmeras, existem incontáveis relatos sobre maus tratos em relação aos cuidados com os animais que são usados nos filmes (assim como em séries de televisão ou até comerciais).
Mesmo não sendo um assunto muito discutido, existem ONGs que trabalham contra isso e pessoas influentes que não medem esforços para evitar que os animais sejam utilizados nesses tipos de projetos. De qualquer forma isso ainda se converte em polêmicas, porque não há uma lei completamente restritiva (pelo menos não até onde eu sei) sobre esse uso. Ao longo dos anos é claro que o uso dos animais no cinema ou na televisão vem mudando, mas não foi totalmente erradicado.
Eu penso que em se tratando de animais com uma finalidade específica dentro da trama, é possível utilizá-los, mas não com o objetivo de usá-los exaustivamente em busca em uma “cena perfeita” (algo que já aconteceu muito em filmes), ou de uma maneira que não cause maus tratos a eles. Cachorros, gatos, cavalos ou macacos são as escolhas mais usuais, e ainda sim, muitos cineastas já se deram conta de quem podem substituí-los por efeitos digitais para evitar maiores polêmicas.
Dependendo do tipo de cena na qual os animais estão inseridos, à substituição por efeitos digitais pode até soar como algo muito artificial (como por exemplo: interação entre crianças ou adultos com esses animais em atividades de rotina, como um passeio no parque em um filme de comédia, romance ou drama). Por outro lado, em filmes mais complexos, as cenas envolvendo muita ação poderiam ser repensadas com essa inserção de animais criados de maneiras artificiais.
Tudo depende do que está sendo feito, porque o uso de animais no cinema e na televisão dificilmente é algo que será extinto. As interações entre seres humanos e animais é algo mais do que natural. Os filmes e as séries de televisão são “reféns” (até certo ponto) dessas interações, mas precisam aprender a limitá-las dentro de conceitos mais ponderados. O realismo de uma cena pode ser atingido sem o uso de animais reais, mas é preciso entender o contexto dos projetos.

This article reminds me of the movie title: John wick. Outside of the message the movie and the characters are passing in a general note I think that of the Dogs aspect should be talked about too. Most times I ask myself if we really deserve these pets because when I count their therapeutic essence, I think there is more to them than many think.

It's hard to think that AI might not be use with animals just as much as with humans, I do not know the market but I guess using animals in productions are cheaper than humans, but this problem of using animals in movies and tv series is something that AI can fully solve soon
