In this post we take a look at How To Use IMAGINARY() Function in Google Sheets. Previously we looked at the HEX2BIN() Function in Google Sheets. This tutorial was about the conversion of the HEX to Binary and this tutorial was pretty cool which you can check in the link. Now for this tutorial we look at how the Imaginary numbers works and how to print them out.
IMAGINARY() Function is the one which we are going to be making use of in the google sheets. When you are dealing with the complex number and want to take out the imaginary coefficient of that number then you can get that number out of the same using the imaginary function.
You can now take a look at the visual instruction of this tutorial through the video. Let's take a look at one of the tutorial where you can learn how to use IMAGINARY() Function in Google Sheets.
First thing here you should do is make use of the sample complex number and use that number to dissect and get the number to be printed on the google sheets. So here is one such example that you can make use of.
3+5i
Now let's take a look at some of the complex numbers.
Use full complex number
Here's one such complex number where you want to separate the imaginary number.
=IMAGINARY("3+5i")
This should give you the value of 5 back. Now next thing we can take a look at here.
Use the imaginary number only
Here's another example where say you pass on the imaginary number and try to get it back. It should also give the 5 number back to you.
=IMAGINARY("5i")
Now let's take a look at if we pass the real number to the same and what we get as an answer.
Use the Real Number through formula
Here you would be getting the 0 value as well.
=IMAGINARY("35")
Here the value of 0 is clear because we are passing the real number and also here you would find that it can be easy to show through the imaginary function formula.
You can keep the below reference image for your examples.

Now let's talk about where you can use this function. Say you are working with a program where you have the complex formulas and you want to take out the real and the imaginary numbers. And you want to sort them in the columns. In such case you can make use of the imaginary() function in this case. You can also use the real() function as well it would work the same way.
I plan on covering few more of such functions before wrapping up some of those tutorials. I would be then covering the tutorials like coda, airtable and also other no code tutorials. I hope to cover some really good content on the topic of the no code. I have decided to cover them for entire 2024 and the 2025. If you like such topics, make sure to share, like and subscribe my main channel through the video.
I'll add more spreadsheet tutorial by the next week. :)
