In this post, we look at How to Use SORTN Function in Google Sheets. Previously we learned how to use the GOOGLEFINANCE function in Google Sheets. It was fun trying to make use of the googlefinance function for variety of the data from the stock market and also learning to sort and get it filtered withn the query itself. So if you happen to like queries like that it would help us manage a lot of interesting finance data. Do check out that tutorial if you are interested.
There are times when you want to make use of the data sorting and for it to work properly you have to create table, add the data and then build on the same. Some of the time that is enough to get you started with the data and the content. So in this context you want to use the function that could help with variety of sorting option based on the rows, columns and the specific data in the cells. So we are going to be checking out the same.
Who should make use of the SORTN function in the Google Sheets? I think anyone who has the data in the table and also has managed to get the specific output like return the n data. So our goal is to get say like first and last and maybe the middle result in some cases. So there are some of the sample data that you can pick up from the spreadsheets that are out there. I would say you should definitely get that for yourself. You can check it here.
Let's take a look at one of the tutorial where you can learn how to use SORTN Function in Google Sheets.
First thing you should do is get the Google Sheets spreadsheet there and also make sure to add some sample data that you can use and also make sure to have that data being used for the example purpose here as well.
Check the below image for the table for the sample data and that you would be making use of for the table and that we would be manipulating and hopefully this is how it can be used to work with the data.

So the basic formula that we would be using is something like this.
SORTN(range, n)
Now looking at the data from the table given above make sure to create a formula to get the range of the data. So for that check the example below.
=SORTN(A2:C6)
As you can see here we given it the range and not the total number of the results there. And now what if we give that the range and then also the number of results that we want out of the same.
=SORTN(A2:C6, 2)
You can also use the SORT function along with this particular function. So that you would be able to get the result with the mix and the SORTN too can give you variety of interesting results that would fit the scenario for yourself.
Now hopefully this formula and the overall output should get you cleared. And this would also help you with the variety of the output options that are out there. I can tell you from my experience that those who are planning on using the SORTN function for specific set of the results out of the complex data and the data which has some form of the connections, you would find that useful for yourself. So from that context I'd say tyou should check out the SORT and also the SORTN functions.
Next few weeks I am going to be making use of the functions like the GROWTH and the TEXT function. I would say that these two functions are on the next line and we have a lot of interesting data to look over and work with. I feel if I can continue to make some new videos that would add up with more tutorials on the Google Sheets and this would be a good approach for people who want to build upon the content on the spreadsheet which I intend to cover more everyday basis. I'd recommend you on that part.
I need followers and the subscribers for the channel. So if you liked these tutorial and also happen to share it with others that would be a good option for the income as well.I'd say those people need to work on the interesting set of the examples or so. Make sure to check my google sheets playlist and that would give you enough good tutorial to try out as well. Itd be fun to play with the set of these tutorials would be fun to play around with as well.
I'll add more spreadsheet tutorial by the next week. :)
