In this post, we take a look at How to Import an Excel File in SPSS. I am changing the content lately to just avoid getting bored talking about same topic for years. So I thought why not check out some of the data science softwares. And so comes the SPSS in the discussion and hopefully we can get more tutorials covered.
So what is the problem to be solved here? We have SPSS trial that we can get from the IBM website. Make sure to create IBM ID and also make sure to create Excel sample data. You can go to the google and search for variety of the sample data. You can use the kaggle website to get the sample data.
Next thing make sure to have your SPSS download and also you can add your key so that the trial would begin. And this would get you an idea on how to use the software. It gives you 30-45 days of the trial which is good enough.
Check the below video if you prefer the visual instructions for the Importing excel data to SPSS.
If you download the SPSS from the website and also started the trial. Now go to the kaggle and get the sample file as well. You can pick any sample data and not something you are restricted here. Below is one good data to try out.

Here are the steps that you need to follow in order to get the excel data into the software.
- First thing you should do is make sure to open the software. If it is in trial, it'd continue to ask you to register once the trial ends. And that is fine. You just have to go ahead and go to the File menu and then make sure to check for the Open menu options.
- Now that you have one of the open file dialog box is open. You have to now check for the data options here. So that you would be taken to the dialog box where it asks you to locate the file.
- Here you located the file and now your option is to click open and then take the file to the opening and now you can go ahead and sort the data out for yourself.
- In this read excel file option window you have to set some of the settings. Like checkmark for the first row for the header name. And then there are some of the settings that you have to check and work with as well.
- Make sure to select your excel file at the top of this particular window so that the data properly appears below. Set the range for your data too. And do any other options that are applicable for your content.
- Make sure to double check and then click OK.
That's it. You have now imported the excel data into the SPSS. And that has made the content easily visible into the SPSS software. You can also make sure to import other data formats and if possible I will be covering that in the upcoming tutorials. As of now a lot of interesting data formats that you can read with the SPSS so hopefully this tutorial helps.
Check the above video and my channel too. So that any new update on the SPSS related tutorials and the data science related tutorials you can check out. When you like, share and subscribe that helps me too. Both financially and also maintains some motivations where things just make sense for me in terms of the appearing content in your feed.
I'll see you later in next week and hopefully you would find the value in the tutorial. :)
