Notes On Student Environments

in Educationyesterday

Hi there. In this education post, I talk about student environments. The motivation behind this post was mostly based on my work in (online) educational services.

Background Distractions In Online Learning

With a few of the students I work with online, there are background distractions. You may never know the exact reasons but you do suspect that there are background distractions behind the student online. These distractions can include:

  • Crying Baby
  • Someone cooking in the kitchen (not too bad)
  • Loud dog/cat/pet
  • Annoying sibling
  • Parent/Guardian who may not know the student is online and talks loud

Distractions do hinder learning for the student as attention is taking away from learning. It is also hard for the educator to teach a distracted student. You don't know if the student is paying attention or not online. What makes it worse is if the student has sound and/or video off. You do not know if the person is there sometimes.

Upbringing By Family

There were education posts on here that parenting is important. I do agree. Parenting is a catalyst factor that can accelerate or hinder a child's learning progress over the years. Parents that support and invest in their child's education are likely to have kids have successful careers when they grow older. Young students who don't get much support from parents may not have good fundamental skills when they reach adulthood.

Unfortunately, there are some parents that don't value education. They may have this belief that you don't use what you learn so why learn at all. Some parents work long hours which results in not seeing the kids. Some parents do look at their child's progress in school and some don't. One extreme case is when the parents are fighting or if there is abuse in the household. This video of a young guy doing pushups while parents are arguing was one reason I made this post.

Let's look at the good side though. There are parents who really want the best for the kids. They may be willing to spend a lot of money for a chance to fulfill their kids dreams of being a singer, dancer, doctor, actor, martial artist, professional athlete. Time would be spent to bring their kids to practice and for tutors. This does assume that the family does have money and time for the kids.
