Oba Efusa was a wise Edo ruler who ruled over Nigeria many years ago.He was very fond of intelligent and clever men. He was also known for rewarding wise men.
There were nine clever men in his court. Oba Efusa liked them very much.
These nine clever men were called the chiefs of the court of Oba Efusa. Eromosele was one of them. But he was the cleverest amongst them. There are many tales about Eromosele's wit and intelligence and also about the foolishness of others.
One day Oba Efusa and Eromosele were discussing about the difference in the nature of human beings. Eromosele said,"I think that a person can do anything to become rich".
But Oba Efusa had a different opinion.
"Your majesty,i will surely find such a man",said Eromosele. On hearing these words, all rhe courtiers laughed at Eromosele.
Soon Eromosele came to know of a man in the kingdom who was very poor. His wife and children were starving.Eromosele knew that the man was in dire need of money. He took the poor man to the palace. The poor man agreed to spend a night in the pool in other to get a big reward from the emperor.
The poor man kept on standing all night in the cold water of the pool. In the morning he came out of the pool and stood before the emperor.
"My lord!"replied the poor man,"I kept my eyes on the light burning on the roof of your palace and thus i kept standing in the cold water".
"Ah!"said the emperor,"you have broken the rule by getting warmth from that light. He should not be given the reward".
The poor man came out of the palace without any reward. When he had gone only at a little distance,he met Eromosele. He told the entire story to Eromosele.Eromosele thought for a while and then brought three long poles. He fixed them on the ground and put a container full of rice and water in them. Then he lit a fire on the ground just beneath the container.
"What are you doing?"asked Oba Efusa.
"Your majesty, I'm cooking the rice,"replied Eromosele.
"Are you a fool?"said Oba Efusa,"your pot is too far from the flame.
How can rice be cooked from so far?"
"Your majesty!if the light on the roof of the palace can give warmth to the man standing in the pool of cold water in your place, then my fire can surely cook the rice,"said Eromosele.
On hearing Eromosele's words,Oba Efusa at once understood what Eromosele was trying to say.He rewarded the poor man suitably.
Thus,Eromosele turned the tables using his wit and intelligence.
Answer the following questions.
•Who was Oba Efusa?
•Who were the chiefs?
