The Myth

If a website is ranked #1 on google. It is legitimate and safe to click.

The Truth

Google's algorithm is brilliant, but it is not perfect. Malicious actors are experts at manipulating it. The #1 spot can be bought, hacked or gamed by scammers.

How Scammers Hijack the #1 Spot:

Black-Hat SEO:
Scammers use unethical techniques to artificially boost their site's ranking. They might stuff the page with popular keywords, create thousands of fake backlinks, or use "doorway pages" designed solely to rank high .
Google Ads:
Many users do not realize the very first link, labeled "ad", is a paid advertisement. Scammers buy ads for popular search terms to impersonate legitimate companies.
Compromised Legitimate Sites:
Sometimes, hackers into a legitimate, high ranking website and inject malicious code or create hidden pages that host scams. The domain is real and trusted but the specific page is dangerous.

How to Spot a Fake search Result

  • Look for the "Ad" Label
  • Read the URL Carefully
  • Trust Your Gut
  • Go Direct
