Today we will continue studying what is the Center of Gravity, the Experiment of today is very simple but in the same way it will not stop surprising you, we will use elements that you can get at home and you will be able to appreciate what the Center of Gravity represents and means.
But before starting the fun it is important that we know or remember a basic concept.
What is the Center of Gravity?
The center of gravity is the point where all the gravitational forces that are exerted on a body are found. It is the place where the sagittal, frontal and horizontal planes meet. Source
Yes now! let the fun begin!
"Magic Can"
Materials:
1 can of empty soda
A little water in a glass
A little sand
Process:
- First we try to place the empty tin diagonally and we will try to make it stay that way on its own.
- Then we will do the same procedure but placing a little water inside the can.
- Now finally we will do the same but we will place a little sand inside the can and observe what happens.
What happened?
- With water:
When we put a little water in the can, we lower the Gravity Center and we achieve a surprising equilibrium, which keeps it in that position.
- With the sand:
With the sand we achieve the same result, the tendency of the Center of Gravity to recover the lowest position is what allows the can achieve this surprising balance.
