Last year, I worked with a school founder to interview potential staff members. We set clear criteria, and one important requirement stood out, maintaining a positive tone when discussing former schools.

During the interviews, I asked a simple question to a teacher, “Why did you leave your previous school?” Her response was surprising. She poured out a series of negative comments and revealed personal details about her former employer. I was shocked, not only by her words but also by her lack of professionalism.

This teacher had great skills and experience, but her character raised serious concerns. In any respected profession, character always comes first.

To all educators, I want to remind you that not every school will be your permanent home. Sometimes growth demands change, and at other times circumstances make it necessary to move on. However, this should never lead you to speak ill of your former institution.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF BITTERNESS

When a teacher speaks poorly of a previous school, it is your integrity that will be questioned, not the school’s. You may have genuine reasons for leaving, but there are better and more respectful ways to express your experience without turning it into gossip.

MAINTAINING PROFESSIONALISM

As you progress in your career, remember that maturity is not shown by what you suffered but by how you talk about it after leaving. Keep your professionalism intact, even when faced with challenges. The way you speak about your past employers speaks volumes about the kind of person you are and determines how future employers will perceive your values. Always focus on lessons learned, not on mistakes made by others.

Leave the school, but do not leave your integrity behind.
