Twitter Hack Leads to Over $130,000 BTC Scam from High Profile Accounts Like Gates, Obama, Musk

in Deep Dives4 years ago (edited)

A recent flurry of Twitter messages from popular personalities and companies had offered to give people double the amount of Bitcoin that they would send to a bitcoin address. The general message read:

I am doubling all payments sent to my BTC address for the next 30 minutes. You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000.

This type of message was sent from the accounts of Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Apple, Joe Biden, Jeff Bezoz and more.

This was a clever hack. Apparently a Twitter employee with access to the management panel of all users was hacked. This allowed the nefarious perpetrator to send out messages on behalf of popular users to con people into "Free BTC".

Apparently, people should disable third party services to avoid having a message like this appear on your account. You can go to settings-> account -> apps and sessions -> then revoke access from all third party apps.

Twitter is investigating, and some people may not be able to Tweet or reset their passwords as a result.

Before you knew this, looking at a single of the above messages, would you have done it?

I find this hilarious. Are these suckers not aware of these types of scams? Are they really not aware of the bullshit "send me $1 and I will send you $2 back" frauds that have existed for decades? I guess we can blame email spam filters for being too good.

Honestly, how can you fall for this? Obama said he's going to give me double what I send him in BTC? Biden? Gates? As if these people have any respect for Bitcoin to begin with. As if they would use Bitcoin to give out free money? Cmon people, get a freaking clue!

You aren't getting your money back sucker. It's a shame people fall for it, but damn people, do a bit more critical thinking rather than succumb to a FOMO of a 30 minute window to get something for nothing. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Just because some famous person or company said they are going to do it, will they really? There is no other explanation that this totally being legit and real? You didn't exactly talk to them face to face.

I guess this is an excuse some will use to "prove" how dangerous Bitcoin is. We need to control that Bitcoin stuff because stupid people are falling for obvious scams. Personal responsibility? Nah. We need to coddle them like children. They can't be allowed to use BTC :P

Sort:

Someone did a twitter hack to cover a Bitmex position hahaha.

If that's a joke it flew over my head hehe, I don't know what you mean...

its a joke, twitter hacker is apparently a bitmex trader. I figured hes sweating about a liquidation so came up with a way to raise some funds quickly to cover his margin haha.

That’s a shame but people are honestly falling for so many things nowadays it’s sad.

I think they will use this as the latest bunch of bs as to why crypto is bad lol as if people doing it with US dollars can’t do the same stupid thing. The better part is we can track some of it by looking at that bitcoin address transactions to see the different wallets. I’m sure someone will do a bunch of work to track it somewhere.

Indeed it is sad. Gotta protect people from the scammers, government will save us.

I agree with you, its unthinkable, and extraordinarily retarded.
That being said, we have seen hundreds and hundreds of people in Steem/hive fall for similar scams, although with a phishing context.

The underlying issue being, I guess, an inherent conceptual weakness, in a part of the crypto-community that drives them to think that they can get something for nothing.

A speculative dogma that opens them to that idea that we can all get something for nothing if we just speculate right and fuck the morons that would buy our shit, like, say... Ned/Dan.

In short, the philosophy that the thing to do is to find the proper ponzi, get out in time and then find the next.

Regarding the ultimate hyperbolic goal, it would seem to me its twitter credibility, and not crypto itself.

And you might ask yourself, but why? think about it in this framework for a change:

And yes, Im sure you see the irony of that last graphic being published in, of all places, Twitter.

Indeed, getting something for nothing and trust that it's legit. Ppl need to be less trusting. FOMO is all about getting in before someone else and out early before you get left holding the bag. That's the whole market, all markets. Just a big gambling game.

It's funny seeing my bitcoin wallet address posted everywhere..oops! lmao.

(just thought i'd better edit and point out that this is humor. 'Tis a rarer and rare commodity in these parts.)

Note to all hackers, feel free to use my BTC address in those scam messages, thanks a million dollars.

This major hack of Twitter would almost be funny, except for the naive/greedy users who lost BTC. More negative news tying hackers to the use BTC is not helpful. It is hitting the US national news, the bad publicity will probably scare off many potential future cryptocurrency users.

I disagree, the news doesnt primarily tie btc to hackers, but Twitter to gullible idiots that believe on getting something for nothing, it says nothing about the hackers, those dudes could have made two orders of magnitude more money if they wanted. It mostly talks about Twitter and its audience, thats the message sent on the DL I believe. Thats the real psyop payload.

I'm afraid that these type of hacking incidents will delay the wide-spread adoption of cryptocurrency. It doesn't help to have articles like the one below, which state "Bitcoin is an attractive target for scammers because it can be used worldwide".

Twitter Hackers Divert Bitcoin Spoils to Other Accounts

  1. You have to admit that crypto IS an attractive medium for ransoms and scams in a cyber context, if not you are just delusional.

  2. The widespread adoption of crypto is influenced by many factors, the least of which is (1)
the most important being, I assume, that the cryptosphere is even more filled with scams than the banking system its supposed to surmount.

  3. Just because we think, rationally that the crypto tech would allow for a more decent system with less corruption, it doesnt mean that it does in the initial stages,
if not , just see the major players in the scene, Justin Sun and CZ and the latest issue with steem, wake up!

People who dislike cryptocurrencies don't care. So, this doesn't really matter. Anybody who takes the time to understand Bitcoin will find this hack to be funny. Bill Gates would never give people money.

exactly, this hack, ultimately is not about crypto, as you said, you can use other coins

People who lost BTC deserve it for being retarded.

Yeah it can be viewed that, but the mainstream viewers weren't interested in BTC anyways, they just believe the news.

It's really amazing how many have fallen for this scam. Actually, common sense should tell you that something like this cannot be right. Some really have to go through the painful experience to understand it.

Yup, chaos teaches. some need to suffer to smarten up ;)

All those people hate Bitcoin and that is the comedy of it.

delusion 3.0

They get to hate it even more now lol. Scammer used my image to rip ppl off with bitcoin lol

Oh gosh... Amazing.... People never learn. Is it as funny as it is tragically sad

One minute silence for those who sent Btc. Lol

How do these people even trust that. Did that guy sent over 1.62 BTC. That's more than my entire crypto portfolio! I guess fools and their money part ways very easily.

Do you know what's really nice? Watching in real-time how that BTC wallet is getting bigger and bigger. People are so easily manipulated, it's scary.

LOL that's a sight to behold, stupidity in action.

I love Bitcoin. So, it gets people to think about Bitcoin and that is good because fiat sucks balls.

People take lies for truth, and for me, it's just funny.

Wow! This is really sad. I nearly fell for one one these a while ago but had a rethink before i could make the mistake. I think we should erase and antagonize the minset of easy money because the scams work because of greed

I comment there and welcome them to connect hive blockchain.

Greed, pure greed! Smart people are learning from other people's mistake, others from their own. Nothing is safe anymore.

What happened to twitter is so strange, because I wrote an article a few days ago, saying that the accounts where the btc were transferred, were from Bitpay and Coinbase, but it happens to be a curious coincidence, that they are business addresses, that is to say, they are hardly traceable. So you're thinking that there's something here that I don't know rick looks fake.

Really shows how brainwashed people are into believing these lying scumbags are "authoritative voices" they should listen to and trust.

I've never used Twatter, but I saw this video about it today and found it amusing/accurate/sad:

Why was this comment flagged, and so brutally?!

And these people would never promote Bitcoin.

I look for opportunities to mention cryptocurrencies (not fake virtual currencies like Libra) whenever I get the chance. Like when news articles say we need to get rid of cash to save us from the coronavirus, and debit/credit cards plus phone apps are the only way forward, I like to remind people that cryptocurrencies exist, and already have solved most of these problems.

Agreed, Libra sucks and people should also save some of their coins as well, as in quarters, dimes, etc, just in case as governments, world banks, the United Nations, corporations, monopolies, empires, etc, try to confiscate and steal and ban and destroy and get rid of cash and change. Oh, change, pun intended. They don't want money change or real change like alleged Obama Hope Change.

That's a good video. Social media vacuum of the "soul".

People fall for the governments lies all the time. It is almost as if people are trained to be gullible.

Yes, because government looks out for us, don't ya know? They have our best interest at heart. :P Schools also train, I mean teach, us to be great critical and independent thinkers, and not be gullible at all. Thanks for popping in Dan ;)
